Chapter 14

The black federal SUV pulled smoothly into the driveway at precisely ten o'clock. Two men in sharp dark suits stepped out of the vehicle, walking purposefully toward the front porch. Mark answered the door before they even had a chance to knock, greeting them with a firm handshake and leading them into the living room where Sarah sat waiting.

Special Agent Vance introduced himself, opening a leather portfolio and placing a set of official documents on the coffee table. He was a tall, imposing man with graying hair and an attentive demeanor that commanded immediate respect.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, thank you for coming forward," Agent Vance said professionally. "Deputy Miller briefed us on the events of last night. If what you have on this drive is legitimate, we have enough evidence to dismantle a decade of corporate corruption and environmental violations."

Sarah reached into her pocket, withdrew the small black USB drive, and placed it gently onto the coffee table between them. To her, it looked like a tiny piece of plastic, but she knew it carried the weight of history, danger, and ultimately, justice.

"It's all there," Sarah stated clearly. "Every memo, every financial transfer, every name."

Agent Vance picked up the drive, sliding it securely into an anti-static case. "We'll verify the contents immediately. As for your safety, we are placing your property under federal protection detail for the next few weeks while we issue arrest warrants for the executives involved."

"Thank you, Agent Vance," Mark said, standing up and shaking the agent's hand once more. "We just want our lives back."

"You'll get them back, Mr. Hayes," the agent assured them with a reassuring nod. "People like the ones who threatened you won't be bothering your family ever again."

As the federal agents left the house and drove away down the suburban street, Sarah walked over to the front window, watching the SUV disappear around the corner. She let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling as though an invisible backpack filled with rocks had finally been lifted from her shoulders.

Mark walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

"It's over," Mark whispered into the quiet air.

Sarah leaned back against his chest, smiling softly as she watched Louis and the baby playing happily on the living room rug. "Yes," she whispered back. "It's finally over."
