Chapter 12

The digital clock on the microwave read 2:14 AM, but sleep was the furthest thing from anyone's mind. The baby was sleeping peacefully in his crib down the hall, and Louis had finally drifted off to sleep curled up on the living room sofa under her favorite blanket. Mark and Sarah sat together at the kitchen table, a single overhead light illuminating the space where the milk had spilled just hours earlier.

Sarah took a slow sip from a mug of chamomile tea Mark had made for her. Her hands were still slightly shaky, but her voice was steady as she began to speak.

"My father worked as the chief financial officer for a major industrial manufacturing firm in the city," Sarah started, staring down into her teacup. "Behind closed doors, the company was dumping toxic waste into the local river system to save millions on disposal costs. When my father discovered what was happening, he wanted to blow the whistle."

"Why didn't he?" Mark asked quietly, listening intently.

"Because they threatened him. They threatened us," Sarah explained, a shadow of fear crossing her face. "They told him if he spoke a single word, my mother and I would pay the price. So, instead of going public right away, he copied all the internal memos, the bank transfers, and the environmental reports onto an encrypted drive. He gave it to me right before he passed away, telling me to keep it safe until the right moment to expose them."

Mark reached across the table, covering her hand with his own. "And the men who came today?"

"They've been searching for that drive for over a decade," Sarah said. "They thought my father gave it to me, but I didn't even know what was on it until I opened the files a few years ago. I hid it away, hoping they would eventually give up and forget about us."

"They won't forget," Mark said realistically. "Not now that they know you're still here. But we don't have to hide anymore, Sarah. We go to the federal authorities. We hand over the drive, and we let the law protect us."

Sarah looked up at Mark, a profound sense of gratitude and love shining in her eyes. "Are you sure? This is going to turn our lives upside down again. There could be media, investigations..."

"I don't care about any of that," Mark interrupted softly. "I care about you. I care about our kids. We face it together. Just like we did tonight."
