Chapter 9: Silence in the House

The house felt cavernous and terribly cold with Arthur gone. Clara spent the evening sitting on the edge of Daniel’s bed, reading him stories until his breathing evened out into the deep, steady cadence of sleep. The silence downstairs was deafening, devoid of the usual background noise of Arthur's late-night conference calls or the clinking of glasses in the kitchen.

She walked downstairs and poured a cup of herbal tea, holding the warm mug between her palms as she stared out the kitchen window into the dark backyard. The separation wasn't planned, and it certainly wasn't a formal divorce, but the space Arthur had created by leaving felt significant, like a tectonic plate shifting beneath their feet. For years, they had operated as co-pilots in a well-oiled domestic machine, but the crisis with Daniel had exposed the fact that they were flying in completely different directions.

Her phone buzzed on the counter, startling her in the quiet room. It was a text message from Arthur: *Checked into the downtown hotel. I'm sorry for walking out. I needed space to think. I want to do this right for Daniel.*

Clara stared at the screen for a long time, her thumb hovering over the keypad. She wanted to reply with anger, to push him away and prove that she didn't need him to manage their family's trauma. But the exhaustion in her bones weighed heavier than her pride. Instead, she typed a short, restrained response: *We need to figure out how to be on the same team, Arthur. Not just for Daniel, but for ourselves.*

The reply came back almost instantly: *I know. I'm ready to learn how.*

She set the phone down and walked into the living room, sitting on the sofa where Arthur usually sat. Looking around the familiar space, she realized how much emotional labor she had carried alone, masking her own fears so she could remain the strong one for her son. But the facade was gone now. The raw, messy reality of their lives was out in the open, and there was no going back to the comfortable, oblivious routine they had maintained for a decade.
