Chapter 5: Unspoken Realizations

The morning sun brought no relief to the heavy atmosphere hanging over the Vance household. Arthur sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through emails on his laptop while absentmindedly stirring a mug of black coffee. When Clara walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted with dark circles bruised beneath her eyes, he looked up, frowning slightly at her disheveled appearance.

"You look terrible," Arthur remarked, meant as a casual observation, but it landed with the weight of a physical blow.

"Thanks, Arthur. Sleep was in short supply," Clara replied dryly, pouring herself a glass of water from the tap. She leaned against the counter, her mind racing through the events of the previous night in the closet. She had spent hours calming Daniel down, eventually getting him back to sleep in her own bed while Arthur snored oblivious down the hall.

"Did something happen?" Arthur asked, closing his laptop screen with a sharp snap. "You seem... distant. Even more than usual."

"Daniel had a night terror," Clara said evenly, deciding to offer a carefully edited version of the truth to test his reaction. "He woke up and thought the cast was still on his arm."

Arthur sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Well, that's to be expected. It was a traumatic incident. The doctor said it would take a few days for his brain to recalibrate. Maybe we should take him to a specialized pediatric neurologist in the city. I can call my contacts at the firm and pull some strings to get an expedited appointment."

"Everything is about your contacts and your fixes, Arthur," Clara said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. "Sometimes things just need time and presence, not a corporate solution."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Arthur stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the tile floor. "I'm trying to solve the problem! I'm trying to help our son get back to normal, while you act like I'm the enemy here!"

"You *were* the enemy in that hospital room, Arthur," Clara snapped, the suppressed anger of the past three days finally breaking through her defenses. "When our son was screaming in terror, you didn't look at him to see what he needed. You looked at me like I was a threat. You shoved me away. I haven't forgotten that."

Arthur opened his mouth to retort, but the words caught in his throat. The memory of his own panicked aggression hung in the air between them like a physical barrier. Before he could formulate a defense, soft footsteps sounded in the hallway, and Daniel appeared in the doorway, looking small and fragile in an oversized t-shirt. The argument died instantly, replaced by an uncomfortable, fragile truce as both parents turned their attention to the boy.
