Chapter 10: Small Steps Forward

The following Tuesday, Arthur returned for a joint session with Dr. Harrison, accompanied by Clara. The atmosphere in the consulting room was markedly different from their previous meeting; the defensive posturing and sharp glares were replaced by a weary, cautious vulnerability. Arthur looked tired, his suit jacket wrinkled, as if he had slept in it.
"Space can be a useful tool for perspective," Dr. Harrison began, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Provided it leads to actual reflection rather than emotional withdrawal. Arthur, what did you discover during your night away?"
Arthur looked across the small table at Clara before answering. "I realized that I use my work and my need to 'fix' things as a shield against feeling helpless," he said, his voice quiet and steady. "When Daniel was screaming in that hospital room, my panic wasn't just about him—it was about my own inability to control the situation. I lashed out at Clara because she was handling a reality I couldn't accept."
Clara listened, her expression softening just a fraction. It was the first time she had ever heard Arthur articulate his internal fears without wrapping them in anger or corporate jargon.
"And Clara?" Dr. Harrison turned his gaze toward her. "Where does your need to shoulder everything alone come from?"
Clara looked down at her hands, taking a slow, natural breath. "I've always believed that if I show weakness, the entire structure will collapse," she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "With Daniel’s accident, and then with the neurotoxic reaction... I felt like if I didn't hold him together physically and emotionally, no one else would. I didn't trust Arthur to carry the weight because he always tried to outsource the emotion."
"Healing doesn't happen by outsourcing or by carrying everything alone," Dr. Harrison said gently. "It happens by sharing the burden without turning it into a weapon. Daniel is picking up on your mutual tension. Kids are emotional seismographs. Until the two of you stabilize your foundation, his nervous system will continue to mirror your unspoken conflicts."
As they left the clinic and walked out into the crisp afternoon air, Arthur stopped near the car and turned to Clara. "Do you want to grab a coffee together? Just the two of us? We can leave Daniel with the after-school program for another hour."

Clara hesitated, looking into his eyes, and for the first time in weeks, she saw a genuine, unshielded invitation. She offered a small, tentative nod. "Let's do that."
