Chapter 9

The morning sun broke over the financial district, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons of the city. Outside the corporate headquarters of Chu Corp, a throng of media reporters and camera crews had gathered, sensing blood in the water. Microphones and boom poles bristled in the damp morning air as sleek black cars pulled up to the main entrance.

Mu stepped out of a battered taxi cab half a block away. He had spent the night in his car after being evicted from the hotel suite due to his credit cards being permanently declined. His dark suit was wrinkled, his hair unstyled, and the thin-framed glasses were smudged with fingerprints. He looked every bit a man who had plummeted from the apex of corporate society to the very bottom in less than forty-eight hours.

As he walked toward the glass doors of the tower, a reporter spotted him.

"Mr. Chu! Mr. Chu! Is it true that you embezzled over twenty million dollars?"

Camera flashes erupted like strobing lightning bolts, blinding him momentarily. Boom microphones thrust into his face from every angle.

"Did you coordinate the fraudulent transfers with Su Mumu?" another reporter shouted, pushing forward through the barricades.

Mu tried to shield his face with his forearm, his steps faltering as the hostile crowd closed in around him. Security guards inside the lobby watched through the glass, making no move to assist him; orders from the board of directors had explicitly barred him from entering the executive floors.

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled smoothly into the VIP drop-off zone. The rear door opened, and Lin Xi stepped out. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey trench coat over her business suit, her posture immaculate and composed. She did not flinch at the flashbulbs or the shouting reporters. She moved with the absolute authority of a principal shareholder and executive director.

The media instantly shifted their focus, swarming toward her like a school of predatory fish.

"Ms. Lin! Will you be taking over full control of the subsidiary?"

"Is the divorce finalized?"

Xi stopped for a fraction of a second, looking directly into the primary camera lens. Her expression was calm, stern, and entirely devoid of malice.

"The legal and financial restructuring of the company is proceeding according to strict regulatory standards," Xi stated clearly, her voice cutting through the chaotic noise. "Accountability is not optional in modern business, and betrayal has a precise cost. The legal system will handle the rest."

Without another word, she swept past the barrier, escorted by two private security personnel, and entered the pristine lobby of the tower.

Mu stood frozen outside the glass doors, watching her vanish into the elevator bank. He realized with terrifying finality that he no longer existed in her world. He was merely an extraneous variable that had been systematically excised from the equation.
