Chapter 11

While the corporate autopsy was being conducted on the forty-first floor, the legal net was tightening around Su Mumu on the ground level. Abandoned by Mu and facing immediate prosecution by the tax authorities, Mumu sat in the interrogation room of the city's financial crimes division. The walls were a dismal institutional grey, illuminated by a buzzing fluorescent ceiling fixture that cast a harsh glare over the stainless steel table.
Across from her sat two investigators, their expressions entirely neutral and unimpressed by her tearful demeanor.
"Ms. Su, these wire transfer receipts show that your family's real estate firm received over four million dollars in unallocated funds from the Chu subsidiary," the lead investigator stated, sliding a thick binder across the table. "Your brother signed the acquisition papers for the Bahamas properties using your digital signature as power of attorney."
"I didn't know the funds were illegal!" Mumu sobbed, her mascara running down her cheeks as she clutched her trembling hands together. "Mu told me it was part of an overseas investment portfolio! He said we were securing our future!"
"Ignorance of the origin of funds does not exempt you from money laundering charges," the investigator replied coldly. "Furthermore, forensic analysis of your personal communications shows deliberate concealment of the transactions, including instructions to delete encrypted chat histories after the divorce papers were served."
Mumu slumped back in her chair, the full weight of her reckless ambition finally crushing her spirit. She had traded her youth, her reputation, and her integrity for the promise of wealth and status, only to find herself trapped in a federal investigation with a partner who had abandoned her the moment the walls began to cave in.
The fantasy of high-society luxury had dissolved into the cold reality of criminal indictments and impending prison sentences. There were no wealthy benefactors rushing to her rescue, no sympathetic family members to bail her out. The Chu family had officially disavowed any connection to her, labeling her a rogue opportunist who had exploited their corporate infrastructure.
The door to the interrogation room opened softly, and a legal aide stepped in to hand the investigator a new document. The investigator scanned the page, then looked up at Mumu with a knowing gaze.
"Just to keep you informed, Ms. Su," the investigator said evenly. "Your former partner, Mr. Chu, has officially refused to sign any joint defense agreements. His legal team has submitted documentation attempting to pin the entirety of the shell company operation on your family's real estate firm."

Mumu stared at the investigator in absolute horror, the final illusion of their shared alliance shattering into dust.
