Chapter 12

The evening air was crisp and clear as Lin Xi stepped out of the Chu Tower for the final time. The media circus had dispersed hours earlier, replaced by the quiet hum of evening traffic and the gentle glow of streetlights illuminating the concrete plaza. Marcus Vance walked beside her, carrying a slim leather portfolio containing the finalized dissolution and asset-transfer agreements.
"Everything has been filed with the district court," Marcus said, handing her a sealed envelope containing the certified divorce decree. "The corporate restructuring is complete, and the independent audit has been accepted by the regulatory commission."
Xi took the envelope, sliding her finger under the flap to verify the contents. The official stamp of the municipal court gleamed in the amber streetlamp light. Seven years of marriage, deceit, and corporate maneuvering were officially dissolved into a few lines of legal prose.
"Thank you, Marcus," Xi said, her voice steady and serene. "You've been an invaluable pillar throughout this entire process."
"It was strictly business, Xi," Marcus replied with a respectful nod. "Though I must admit, watching you dismantle a hostile corporate ecosystem from the inside out was a masterclass in strategy."
"When someone forces you to play a game you never wanted to enter, you simply rewrite the rules until the board belongs to you," Xi observed, looking up at the towering skyscrapers glittering against the night sky.
She got into her waiting sedan, the plush leather interior offering a welcome sanctuary of peace and control. As the car pulled away from the curb, she looked out the window at the distant outline of the mountain estate where it all began—the glowing campfire, the burning tie, and the cold clarity of her ultimatum.
She felt no anger, no bitterness, and no regret. The emotional turbulence that had once threatened to overwhelm her life had been entirely replaced by a profound, unshakeable sense of self-ownership. She was no longer defined by someone else's betrayal or a family's conditional approval.

Her phone chimed softly on the seat beside her—not an emergency alert, not a frantic message from Mu, but a routine notification from her venture capital firm confirming a new green-energy startup acquisition she had personally sponsored. She opened the file, reviewed the growth projections, and approved the transaction with a single tap of her finger.
