Chapter 9: Echoes of the Past

By afternoon, the reality of rebuilding required practical action. Clara sat at the laptop on the laminate table, scrolling through remote project management listings while drafting emails to old professional contacts she had neglected during her years under Martha’s thumb. David was in the small kitchenette, assembling a simple lunch of scrambled eggs and toast for Lily, who had finally woken up and was currently sitting on the floor coloring with a box of crayons they had bought at the corner bodega. The red velvet dress had been carefully hung in the small hallway closet, replaced by a pair of soft cotton overalls. The contrast between yesterday’s suffocating elegance and today’s humble reality was stark, but remarkably peaceful. Suddenly, the sharp buzz of Clara’s cell phone broke the quiet rhythm of the afternoon. She picked it up, expecting a spam call or a grocery delivery update. Instead, the screen displayed a withheld number. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She looked over at David, who had stopped stirring the pan, his eyes locked onto her with sudden alertness. Clara swiped the screen and pressed it to her ear. "Hello?" she said, her voice cautious and steady. "Clara," the voice on the other end answered. It wasn't Martha. It was Arthur, Martha’s longtime family attorney, a man whose polished demeanor usually preceded bad news. "Mr. Vance," Clara replied, sitting up straighter in her chair. "What is this regarding?" "I’m calling on behalf of Mrs. Sterling," Arthur said, his tone meticulously professional, devoid of its usual paternal warmth. "There has been a development regarding the estate trust. Mrs. Sterling has requested a meeting at my office tomorrow morning at ten o'roslock. She insists that you and David be present." Clara’s mind raced. Was this another trap? Another ultimatum wrapped in legal jargon designed to break their resolve? "We aren't interested in her trust, Mr. Vance," Clara said firmly. "Please let her know our position hasn't changed." "I understand your hesitation, Clara," Arthur interrupted gently, lowering his voice. "And I wouldn't be calling if this were just another negotiation. It’s about your mother. Your biological mother. Files that Mrs. Sterling has kept sealed for thirty years."
