Chapter 6: Packing the Past

The decision to leave before morning was unanimous, forged in the heavy aftermath of Clara's defiance. Upstairs in the guest bedroom, the winter wind rattled the windowpanes, sending a low, melancholy hum through the quiet house. Clara moved methodically around the room, packing their belongings into two canvas duffel bags. Her movements were precise and unhurried. David stood by the door, holding Lily, who was still fast asleep in her red velvet dress, her blonde hair tangled softly across his chest. The red shoes sat neatly packed in the side pocket of the bag. "We have enough saved for the deposit on the apartment downtown," David said softly, his voice cutting through the whistling wind outside. "We’ll make it work, Clara. We don't need her money. We never really did." Clara stopped folding a wool sweater and looked up at her husband. The rugged lines of his face were softened by the dim bedside lamp, his brown eyes filled with an unwavering loyalty that made her chest ache with gratitude. In that moment, she knew they were making the right choice. Leaving meant stepping into financial uncertainty, but it also meant reclaiming their dignity. As Clara zipped the second bag shut, a sharp knock echoed softly on the wooden doorframe. Neither of them had heard anyone approach down the carpeted hallway. Clara turned slowly to find Martha standing in the threshold. The older woman looked diminished in the dim light, the sharp edges of her authority softened by exhaustion, though her spine remained rigid. She wasn't wearing her cardigan anymore, just a crisp white button-down shirt that made her look remarkably frail. "You're actually leaving," Martha stated, more as a factual observation than a question or a plea. "We are," Clara replied evenly, hoisting the duffel bag over her shoulder. Martha looked past Clara to David and the sleeping child, a complex shadow crossing her weathered features—something that looked dangerously close to regret, though she quickly swallowed it back behind her customary armor.
