Chapter 10: The Sealed File

The mention of her biological mother hit Clara like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs, leaving her momentarily dizzy. Growing up, Martha had always been deliberately vague about the circumstances of Clara’s adoption, painting a grim picture of a reckless, anonymous woman who had abandoned her to the trailer park before disappearing into the ether. Clara had spent her entire life accepting that narrative as the baseline of her unworthiness. "What are you talking about, Arthur?" Clara demanded, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to keep it controlled. David abandoned the stove immediately, walking over to place a steady, grounding hand on her shoulder, his thumb rubbing soothingly against her collarbone. "I cannot discuss the details over the phone," Arthur replied calmly from the other end of the line. "Mrs. Sterling has instructed me to open the physical archive in your presence. It concerns the conditions of your adoption and documents that were... heavily edited at the time of the transfer. I strongly advise you to attend, Clara. You deserve to know the truth, whatever it may be." The call clicked dead before Clara could ask another question. She lowered the phone slowly, staring blankly at the laminate tabletop. The quiet apartment suddenly felt enormous, filled with ghosts and unanswered questions she had buried long ago. "What did he say?" David asked quietly, his eyes dark with concern. Clara looked up at her husband, the raw shock still evident in her expression. "He said Martha kept files. Files about my biological mother that were edited when I was adopted." David’s jaw tightened, a rare flash of pure anger crossing his features. "She lied to you. About everything." Clara nodded slowly, a cold determination replacing the initial shock. The fear of what they might find was eclipsed by an overwhelming need to tear down the final, foundational lie upon which her entire life had been built. They were going to Arthur’s office tomorrow, and Martha was going to run out of secrets.
