Chapter 6 - The Line Drawn in Chalk

"You wouldn't dare," Eleanor hissed, taking a step toward Clara. Her poise cracked, revealing raw malice underneath. "You call the police on your husband's family, and you destroy this entire marriage. Marcus, control your woman!"

"Clara, put the phone down!" Marcus lunged forward, grabbing Clara’s wrist to pull the device from her hand.

It was the first time he had ever used physical force against her. The suddenness of it shocked him just as much as it did her; his grip was hard enough to leave red marks across her pale skin. Clara didn't struggle. She simply stopped moving, staring directly into Marcus’s eyes until he realized what he was doing and recoiled as if he had touched an open flame.

Above them, the sharp, terrified cry of baby Lily pierced through the floorboards. The noise downstairs had finally woken her.

"Congratulations," Clara whispered, pulling her arm back against her chest. "You've crossed every single line in one night."

Penny scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Oh, please. Don't play the dramatic victim because the baby cried. Marcus, the tow truck is moving. Are you going to pay the twelve hundred or not?"

Marcus looked at his hands, then at Clara’s reddened wrist, and finally toward the stairs where his newborn daughter continued to wail. He was cornered, torn between decades of learned subservience to his mother and the reality of the family he had built.

"I can't," Marcus choked out, looking down at the tiles. "The savings account... that was all the liquid cash we had until next Friday. I don't have twelve hundred dollars."

Eleanor’s face contorted into disgust. "You have a credit line! You have emergency credit cards! Do you really care so little about your sister that you’d let strangers haul away your father’s legacy?"

"It's not Daddy's car, Eleanor!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the kitchen cabinets, sharp and commanding. "Marcus’s father drove a beat-up Ford pickup until the day he died! Penny bought that roadster three years ago with insurance money she took from her ex-husband! Stop lying to him!"

Penny went pale, the tears instantly drying on her cheeks. She looked at Eleanor for help, but Eleanor’s eyes were locked on Clara with lethal hatred.

"You miserable outsider," Eleanor snarled, taking another step forward. "You think you can come into this family and dictate terms? Marcus is a Sterling. You are nothing."

Clara didn't flinch. She picked up the kitchen house phone mounted to the wall, deliberately bypassing Marcus, and hit the speed-dial button labeled David - Attorney.

"Marcus," Eleanor commanded, "hang up that phone."
