Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Hallway

The heavy oak front door clicked shut, but the reverberation stayed locked inside the hallway. Eleanor didn’t move. Her boots remained planted on the hardwood, keys dangling between curled fingers like a small, metallic threat. Clara held three-week-old Lily against her collarbone, feeling the rapid flutter of the child’s breathing through the fleece swaddle.

"You think silence makes you strong, Clara?" Eleanor took a half-step forward, her perfume cutting through the faint scent of baby powder. "Your husband owes his sister. This family carried him through medical school while Penny worked double shifts at the cannery. Now that he has an attending's salary, you hoard every dime behind closed nursery doors."

"Marcus paid his loans himself, Eleanor," Clara said. Her voice remained low, deliberate, refusing to match the pitch that had made the baby stir earlier. "And we paid Penny’s rent three months in a row. Our savings are gone. My daughter needs medical insurance, not another handout for Penny’s lifestyle."

Eleanor sneered, a sharp twitch at the corner of her lips. "Lifestyle? Penny’s roof is leaking. Her boys don’t have winter coats. You sit in this quiet neighborhood acting like an empress, forgetting whose blood gave Marcus his backbone." She tapped a manicured nail against the edge of the crib, the sharp click echoing like a metronome. "Marcus won't pick you over his mother. He never has, and he never will."

Clara adjusted her grip on Lily. Her knuckles were stark white under the hall light. She looked directly into the older woman's icy gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to yield the floor beneath her feet. "Get out of my house, Eleanor. Marcus will be home in an hour, and we can discuss your entitlement then."

Eleanor laughed, dry and rattling, but stepped backward toward the threshold. She opened the door, letting a gust of sharp autumn wind bite across the floorboards. Just before crossing out onto the porch, she stopped and leveled a vicious smile.

"He won’t be home in an hour, dear. Check his location. He’s already at Penny’s."
