Chapter 2 - The Tracker on the Screen

The door slammed shut, rattling the glass pane above the transom. Clara stood frozen in the middle of the foyer. The house settled back into silence, but Eleanor’s departing words clung to the air like smoke.

Carefully, Clara walked over to the crib and laid Lily down, wrapping the sides of the swaddle snugly around the infant's shoulders. The baby sighed and drifted back to sleep. With trembling fingers, Clara pulled her phone from the oversized pocket of her sweatpants and unlocked the screen.

The family-sharing map loaded with agonizing slowness. A small blue circle pulsed on the digital grid. It wasn't anywhere near Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital, where Marcus was supposed to be finishing his afternoon rounds. It was parked two towns over, nestled in the gravel driveway of Penny’s duplex on Elm Street.

Clara dialed his number. It rang four times before clicking over to voicemail, followed immediately by an automated text response: In a clinical meeting. Call you later, love.

A cold knot tightened in Clara's stomach. A clinical meeting thirty miles away in his sister's yard. She sat down on the edge of the ottoman, staring at the screen until it went black. For six months, Marcus had promised her that the boundary had been drawn. He had looked into her eyes when she was eight months pregnant, sworn on his late father's memory that Penny’s gambling debts and endless crises would no longer drain their accounts.

She stood up, walked into their home office, and booted up the shared laptop. Her banking app logged in automatically. Clara scrolled straight to the primary savings account—the fund meant for Clara’s unpaid maternity leave and Lily’s upcoming pediatric appointments.

The balance read $412.00.

A wire transfer of eight thousand dollars had cleared forty-five minutes ago, authorized with Marcus's personal security token. A notification pinged at the bottom of her screen—an email notification sent directly to their shared inbox.

It was an auto-receipt from Penny’s personal creditor, with a note attached in Marcus's handwriting.
