Chapter 8

Despite the corporate renaissance inside the Vance tower, the external world was not yet ready to let the transition pass without friction. Two days after the coup, a sleek black town car pulled up to the security gates of the corporate parking garage. A man stepped out—Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner of a predatory private equity firm that had secretly backed Julian’s hostile stock maneuvers. Arthur had lost millions in unbacked loans when Eleanor froze the accounts and exposed the shell company network.

Arthur did not have authorization credentials, but his wealth and past influence had historically allowed him to bypass security protocols. He strode toward the private elevator bank, wearing an expensive Savile Row suit and an expression of calculated arrogance that mirrored Julian's own downfall.

Marcus Thorne intercepted him midway across the lobby before Arthur could even reach the elevator call button. Two private security guards flanked Marcus, their posture rigid and unyielding.

"Mr. Pendelton," Marcus said, his voice devoid of any warmth. "You do not have an appointment. You are not on the authorized visitor registry."

Arthur stopped, sneering down slightly at Marcus. "Save the corporate theater for the shareholders, Thorne. I want a meeting with Eleanor Vance. We need to discuss the restructuring of the debt portfolio that Julian mismanaged."

"There is no debt portfolio to discuss," Marcus replied evenly, not yielding an inch of ground. "The notes were settled, consolidated, and liquidated under federal compliance guidelines forty-eight hours ago. Your firm's exposure was written off as a toxic loss."

Arthur’s face tightened, a vein throbbing visibly at his temple. "You can't just wipe out a fifty-million-dollar credit line without a formal arbitration hearing! We will sue you into bankruptcy within the month!"

"Feel free to file whatever motions you like," a cool, composed voice echoed across the marble lobby.

Arthur turned sharply to see Eleanor walking out from the private executive corridor. She was dressed in a pristine white pantsuit, her posture immaculate, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon. She stopped a few feet away from him, looking him up and down with absolute indifference.
