Chapter 1

The air inside the penthouse living room tasted like cold ash and expensive bourbon. Eleanor Vance sat in the sprawling embrace of the large golden armchair, the heavy damask fabric pressing against her spine. Her white blazer was slightly crumpled at the shoulder from the sudden impact, and a thin line of crimson blood trickled from her lower lip, staining her skin. She slowly raised two fingers, pressing them against the cut, tasting the metallic sharpness of her own defiance. Julian stood tower-like beside the velvet sofa, his dark green suit immaculate, his blond hair catching the recessed lighting of the high-end ceiling fixtures. He had just delivered the final blow to their decade-long partnership, physically casting her aside as if she were nothing more than discarded paperwork.
Beside Julian, Clara in her sleek maroon slip dress smiled a tight, triumphant smile, her manicured fingers resting gently on Julian’s green sleeve. Clara had been Eleanor’s trusted confidante in the corporate strategy wing, yet here she stood, draped over the man who had just orchestrated Eleanor’s complete corporate ruin. Julian adjusted his emerald-silk tie, his chest rising and falling with controlled, arrogant breaths. He looked down at Eleanor with a mask of cold corporate detachment.
"You're officially out of my life!" Julian said, his voice echoing in the vast, high-ceilinged room.
Clara leaned in closer to Julian, her eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction as she looked down at Eleanor. "Did you really think you'd fight him?" Clara mocked, her tone dripping with condescension.
Eleanor did not flinch. She did not scream, nor did she weep. Her dark eyes remained locked onto Julian with a terrifying, unblinking intensity. She knew the corporate structure better than anyone in the room. She knew every loophole, every asset, and every hidden liability. Julian thought he had won because he had managed a physical eviction and a temporary proxy coup, but he fundamentally underestimated her resilience.
Before Julian could relish his victory any further, the heavy double doors at the far end of the room swung open with a resounding thud. Marcus Thorne strode in, dressed in a sharp black double-heeled suit and a stark white tie. His pace was measured, confident, and entirely authoritative. Marcus was the chief legal executor of the Vance estate holdings, a man who answered only to the primary shareholder. He walked past the custom Persian rugs and stopped dead center between the furniture arrangements, ignoring Julian and Clara entirely as he addressed the woman bleeding in the golden chair.

"Boss, the board has voted. You now hold 100% of the shares," Marcus announced firmly.
Julian's smug expression instantly fractured, turning into a pale mask of sheer disbelief.
