BEYOND THE SILENT GLASS / Chapter 8 / 15

The Healing Garden

Spring arrived in Westchester, melting the last traces of snow into the fertile earth.

To help Emma heal from the psychological trauma, Nate took a leave of absence from his investment firm and dedicated his days to building a garden in their backyard.

Together with Emma, they planted rows of lavender, sunflowers, and baby strawberries.

"Flowers grow because they want to reach the sun, right Daddy?" Emma asked, patting the soil around a blooming primrose with her small trowel.

"That's right," Nate smiled, wiping a smudge of dirt from her nose. "No matter how cold the winter is, the seeds never give up."

A child psychologist, Dr. Miriam Hayes, visited twice a week. She sat with Emma in the garden, observing her play and helping her articulate the fear that had kept her silent for so long.

"Children who suffer abuse from caregivers often develop a profound sense of guilt," Dr. Hayes told Nate later over coffee on the patio. "Emma thought that Lily’s cruelty was her own fault—that she wasn't good enough or quiet enough. Your unconditional presence and open honesty are the only medicine that can heal that wound."

"I will give her every second of my life until she knows she is cherished," Nate replied.
