The Mask Slips

The hospital security office was tucked into the basement, a stark contrast to the luxurious suites on the upper floors. Nate sat beside Detective Raymond Miller, an old family friend whose tired eyes had seen decades of domestic tragedies disguised as unfortunate accidents.

On the monitor, the timestamped black-and-white security footage played in reverse, then slowed to normal speed.

At 11:42 PM, Lily had entered Room 1204. She hadn't carried the stuffed animal; she had brought a designer purse. The camera angle through the door's observation window captured her standing over the bed for six uninterrupted minutes. Her posture was not that of a caring mother soothing a sick child; she was leaning over the keypad of the infusion pump, her fingers deliberately punching in overrides while glancing repeatedly at the hallway.

"She knew the staff changed shifts at midnight," Detective Miller murmured, pausing the frame. "What was Emma being treated for, Nate?"

"A recurring respiratory infection," Nate said, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk. "Every time Emma started recovering at home, she’d relapse. Lily always insisted on giving her the evening vitamins. She said it was their bonding ritual."

The terrible realization sank into Nate’s chest like lead. Lily had entered his life two years after his first wife, Sarah, passed away from leukemia. Lily was charming, cultured, and seemed eager to fill the empty void in their home. But over the last six months, Emma’s health had inexplicably deteriorated, while Lily’s social media blossomed with posts about the grueling sacrifices of caring for a chronically ill stepdaughter.

"Munchausen syndrome by proxy, or something colder," Miller stated grimly. "She wasn't just craving attention, Nate. What’s the status of the trust fund Sarah left for Emma?"

Nate felt a chill run down his spine. "If Emma doesn't reach eighteen... the entire estate defaults to my surviving spouse if I'm incapacitated or predecease her."

"And your recent dizzy spells?" Miller asked pointedly.

Nate stared at the flickering screen, the silence answering for him.
