Chapter 13 - The Unraveling Empire

The board members began shouting over one another instantly, the fragile veneer of corporate unity shattering into a chaotic mess of panic and self-preservation. Two junior board members stood up abruptly, grabbing their briefcases and heading straight for the elevators without uttering a single word of farewell. Victoria watched her empire disintegrate before her eyes, her face pale, her hands trembling as she realized every legal maneuver she had planned had come too late.
Arthur didn't try to stop them. He remained seated at the head of the table, his shoulders slumped forward, looking like a man who had finally put down a heavy burden he had carried for thirty years.
Julian Reed stood up quietly from his corner, slipping his digital recorder into his jacket pocket. He offered Maya a brief, respectful nod of professional acknowledgment before walking out of the boardroom to file the morning's breaking investigative report.
Within ten minutes, the massive mahogany boardroom was almost entirely empty, save for Arthur, Victoria, and Maya. The morning sun continued to stream through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, sharp lines across the ruined table and the scattered legal documents.
Victoria turned slowly to face Maya, her voice dropping all its previous venom, replaced now by a cold, desperate exhaustion. "What do you want, Maya? Complete liquidation? Bankruptcy? Do you want to see us in prison?"
Maya walked slowly toward the head of the table, stopping just a few feet away from Arthur. She looked down at the older man who had ignored her existence for a quarter-century, denying her mother's memory while building a dynasty on the ruins of their lives.
"I don't want to see you in prison, Victoria," Maya said quietly. "And I don't care about the liquidation of the company stock."
Arthur slowly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes meeting Maya’s with a fragile flicker of confusion. "Then... what is this all about? Why come here? Why fight so hard?"
"Because you tried to erase us," Maya answered, her voice steady, carrying the quiet weight of decades of buried pain. "You thought my mother would stay quiet in her small cottage while you played the wealthy patriarch with a pristine family legacy. You thought nobody would ever look beneath the surface."
She reached down, picked up the cream-colored envelope containing the original addendum, and slid it back into her leather satchel.
"The controlling shares belong to the estate trust now," Maya continued, turning toward the elevator doors. "Which means Vance Enterprises is no longer your personal piggy bank to fund high-society weddings and corporate cover-ups. Every asset is being restructured into an independent public restitution fund for families who were cheated out of their livelihoods by this company over the last thirty years."
Victoria stepped forward, her voice tight with panic. "You can't do that! You'll bankrupt us entirely! We won't even have enough to cover our legal fees!"
May you like
"Then I suggest you start looking for honest work," Maya replied coldly, pressing the elevator call button. "Just like my mother had to do twenty-five years ago."
