Chapter 10 - Dawn at the Trust Office

The morning sun cast a pale, golden glow over the imposing glass-and-steel facade of Vance Enterprises downtown. At precisely 8:55 AM, the heavy revolving doors spun slowly, admitting a single figure into the cavernous marble lobby. Maya no longer wore her torn tank top and dusty jeans; instead, she wore a sharp, charcoal-gray pantsuit that belonged to her mother—slightly tailored at the waist, carrying the faint, comforting scent of lavender and old paper. Her bruised cheek was partially concealed by a light dab of concealer, though the golden-brown discoloration still hinted at the violence of recent days.

She walked straight past the security desk without breaking stride, her posture completely upright, her dark eyes fixed on the private elevator bank reserved exclusively for executive leadership.

The security guard at the front desk half-started from his stool, recognizing her from the leaked photos circulating through morning news feeds. "Excuse me, miss—you can't go up there without an appointment badge—"

"Tell Victoria Vance that Eleanor’s primary beneficiary is waiting in her boardroom," Maya interrupted smoothly, not even turning her head as she swiped a master keycard directly into the elevator terminal. The digital display chimed softly, illuminating the top-floor penthouse button.

The elevator doors glided shut, sealing her inside the vertical shaft as she ascended toward the thirty-fifth floor. Her heart beat with a steady, rhythmic thrum—not of fear, but of absolute, unyielding purpose. Every floor that flashed by on the digital display represented another decade of deceit she was about to dismantle.

When the elevator chimed and the doors opened, she didn't find an empty hallway. Victoria Vance was already standing there, flanked by two corporate attorneys in identical navy suits, their expressions cold and calculating.

"You're persistent, I'll give you that," Victoria said, her voice devoid of last night's frantic panic, replaced instead by the chilling polish of a seasoned litigator. "But persistence doesn't override corporate law, Maya. We’ve spent the last twelve hours reviewing every filing associated with the estate."

Maya stepped out of the elevator, her heels clicking crisply against the imported Italian tile. She reached into her leather satchel and pulled out the cream-colored envelope, holding it firmly between her fingers.

"You spent the last twelve hours trying to find a loophole to protect your own stock options," Maya countered, walking right up to the heavy oak doors of the executive boardroom. "Too bad your mother anticipated every single one of your legal maneuvers before she passed."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She stepped forward, blocking the doorway entirely. "You have no legal standing, Maya. You're an unacknowledged claimant pursuing an invalid document executed under questionable mental capacity."

Before Maya could reply, the heavy oak doors behind Victoria swung open slowly from the inside. Arthur Vance stood in the doorway, looking as if he hadn't slept a wink. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands trembling slightly as he held a thick manila folder.

"Let her in, Victoria," Arthur said softly, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "The board members are already seated."
