Chapter 2 - Echoes of Silence

The heavy wooden front door remained wide open, letting in the damp evening breeze of the suburban neighborhood. Officer Daniel stood tall in his grey police uniform shirt, his broad shoulders tense as he stared down the woman who had shared his life, his bed, and his home for over a decade. Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson, her chest heaving underneath her silk blouse. The betrayal in her eyes burned hotter than her anger.

"You called them on me?" Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, venomous octave that made the air in the hallway seem to freeze.

"I didn't have to call anyone," Daniel replied, his voice terrifyingly quiet, laced with a cold authority that left no room for argument. "Dispatch heard everything through your open-line phone call before you even realized the line was still connected."

Eleanor let out a sharp, cynical laugh, throwing her head back before lunging forward with a renewed, frantic energy.

"You think you’re the perfect father, don't you, Daniel? You wear that shiny badge and play the hero for the whole damn city, but you have no idea what it takes to keep this family from tearing itself apart!" Eleanor shouted, pointing a trembling finger straight at his chest. "You’re gone for fourteen hours a day! I am the one drowning here!"

Daniel didn't flinch, nor did he step back. He firmly gripped her wrist again, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched near his cheek.

"That still doesn't give you the right to put your hands on our daughter," Daniel growled, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You are done here, Eleanor. The social worker is already on her way, and internal affairs has been notified of the disturbance."

Off to the side, six-year-old Lily sat huddled against the base of the living room wall, clutching her knees tightly to her chest. Her blonde hair fell loosely around her face, the pink clips askew. She watched her parents tear each other apart with wide, hollow eyes that had seen far too much conflict for a child her age. She didn't cry anymore; she had run out of tears.

"Daniel, you can't do this to me," Eleanor pleaded, her tone shifting abruptly from explosive rage to a desperate, trembling whisper as she clawed at his uniform sleeve. "Think about my career. Think about what this scandal will do to my reputation at the firm."

"Your reputation stopped mattering the moment you raised your fist against a child," Daniel stated flatly, signaling to the backup officers waiting on the porch to step inside.

Two uniformed officers entered the hallway, their heavy boots thudding against the hardwood floor. One of them pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs, the metallic click echoing loudly in the quiet space. Eleanor shrieked, thrashing violently against Daniel's grip as the cold metal locked around her wrists.

As they dragged her screaming toward the front exit, Eleanor twisted her neck around, locking eyes with Daniel one last time with a terrifying, malicious smile.

"You think I'm the only monster in this house, Daniel?" Eleanor screamed over her shoulder as the patrol car door slammed shut outside. "Go check the locked drawer in my home office. Open the blue ledger you swore you’d never look inside."
