Chapter 9: The Ultimatum

The tension in the bright luxury living room thickened to a suffocating degree. Julian Vance stood a mere ten feet away, his calm, corporate demeanor far more terrifying than any outward display of rage could ever be. His two associates flanked him silently, their hands resting loosely near their jackets, ready to move at a fraction of a second's notice.

Elena’s knees buckled slightly, but she managed to keep her footing, her voice trembling as she tried to project an authority she no longer possessed. "You have no right to come in here. This is private property. Whatever business you had with Richard ended the moment he was arrested."

Julian turned his cold, calculating gaze toward Elena, tilting his head with mock sympathy. "My dear Mrs. Henderson, nothing ends until the ledger is balanced. Your husband made a catastrophic error in judgment by letting you and your daughter live in such blissful ignorance. He wanted to play the family man while handling high-level criminal enterprises. But now that the house of cards has collapsed, someone has to pay the debts."

"We don't have whatever backup you're looking for," Maya lied smoothly, though her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The black flash drive in her jeans pocket felt heavy, burning against her thigh like a glowing coal. She knew Julian was referring to a different, much larger physical drive—one her father had hidden elsewhere in the estate. She hadn't found it yet, but the fact that Julian believed it was here meant the search had only just begun.

Julian’s smile didn't reach his eyes. He slowly shook his head, taking another step forward until he was close enough for Maya to catch the faint scent of expensive cologne mixed with cold rain. "You’re a terrible liar, Maya. Just like your father, you think you can outsmart people who have spent decades playing a much larger game. Richard was arrogant, but he was cautious. He wouldn't risk losing everything without keeping a final insurance policy close to home."

Julian raised a hand, signaling his associates. The two men immediately split apart, moving with silent, practiced efficiency toward the double doors leading to the rest of the mansion.

"Stop!" Maya yelled, lunging forward a step, raising the brass paperweight defensively. "You can't just search our home!"

Julian didn't even look back at her. He kept his cold, steady gaze locked on Maya’s face. "Watch us. And while my men secure the premises, let’s have a civilized conversation about choices. You have twenty-four hours before federal asset forfeiture claims this estate, leaving you and your mother penniless. But if you hand over that master drive to me right now... I can ensure you leave this place with enough capital to start over anywhere in the world."

Elena let out a sharp gasp, looking at Julian with sheer disbelief. "You're trying to buy us off? After everything?"

"I’m offering you a survival strategy, Mrs. Henderson," Julian replied softly, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "Because if my men find that drive before you hand it over voluntarily... there won't be any survival strategy for either of you."
