Chapter 13: The Precinct Doors

The neon lights of the city precinct buzzed against the dark evening sky, casting a harsh, sterile glow over the rain-slicked pavement outside. The waiting area was a chaotic swirl of stressed civilians, tired officers shuffling paperwork, and the low, constant hum of fluorescent lights. It was a far cry from the quiet, vaulted luxury of the Henderson living room, but to Maya and Elena, the crowded room felt like the safest place on earth.
They pushed through the heavy glass doors, the cool air conditioning hitting them instantly. Elena pulled her dark trench coat tightly around her shoulders, her eyes scanning the room with cautious alertness. Maya stayed close beside her, her hand resting firmly on the canvas duffel bag slung over her shoulder.
"Stay here, Mom," Maya whispered, spotting a tall, broad-shouldered man in a plain gray suit leaning over the front desk, reviewing a stack of case files. It was Detective Vance. "I’ll talk to him."
Maya walked across the linoleum floor, weaving through a group of waiting citizens, and tapped gently on the edge of the reception counter. Detective Vance looked up immediately, his sharp gray eyes narrowing slightly as he recognized her. He excused himself from the desk officer and stepped over to meet her, his expression serious and professional.
"Miss Henderson," Vance said, his voice low so as not to draw the attention of the crowded room. "What are you doing here? I thought your estate was secure under local patrol protocol after your father’s arrest."
"It isn't secure, Detective," Maya replied, her voice steady and urgent. She reached into her pocket, pulling out the small black flash drive and holding it out toward him on the flat of her palm. "Julian Vance and his associates broke into our house less than two hours ago. They searched the master dressing room and took a decoy drive my father had hidden there. But this is the real one. The complete, unedited digital ledger of every illegal transaction, shell company, and forced eviction."
