Chapter 5: An Unexpected Visitor

The shrill ringing of the intercom echoed through the vaulted living room, a jarring contrast to the heavy, suffocating tension that had just filled the space. Richard didn't move immediately. His eyes remained locked on Maya for a fraction of a second longer, weighing the risk of leaving the flash drive in her possession against the immediate threat signaled by the front gate call. With a sharp, decisive motion, he turned his back on his daughter and strode toward the control panel mounted by the double doors.
Elena remained frozen by the armchair, her hands still trembling against her face. The elegant facade of her existence was crumbling piece by piece, and she lacked the tools to rebuild it. "Richard... who is that? Who comes to the gate without an appointment on a Tuesday morning?" she asked, her voice tight with rising hysteria.
Richard pressed the talk button, his executive composure partially reassembled, though a thin sheen of sweat now glistened on his forehead. "Yes? State your business."
A static-laced voice crackled through the speaker, deep and entirely devoid of warmth. "Mr. Henderson. My name is Detective Vance, city precinct. I have a warrant for your financial records and a subpoena to inspect the home server network. I’d advise you to unlock the front gates immediately, or we will bring them down."
The words hit the room like a physical shockwave. Elena let out a stifled scream, her knees finally giving out, causing her to sink heavily onto the velvet cushion of the chair. She stared blankly at the floor, the luxury shopping bags she had dropped earlier now looking like pathetic trash in the wake of impending ruin.
Richard’s hand remained frozen on the intercom button. He slowly turned his head to look back at Maya. The teenager hadn't flinched at the news; if anything, her shoulders dropped an inch, the crushing weight of her secret finally shifting off her chest, even as the walls began to cave in around them. She had done it. She had made the call two hours ago before confronting him.
"You," Richard whispered, the word carrying a lifetime of venom and betrayal. "You called them."
"I didn't have a choice," Maya replied steadily, her voice calm despite the violent pounding of her heart. "You wouldn't listen to me. You wouldn't stop. Someone had to put an end to it before anyone else got hurt."
Richard released the intercom button. He didn't shout. He didn't make a scene. Instead, a chilling, dead calm settled over him. He walked slowly back toward the center of the room, stopping just a few feet away from his daughter. His eyes were cold, devoid of any paternal connection, looking at her as if she were a fatal bug in his system.

"You think this is justice, Maya?" Richard asked quietly, the sound carrying a terrifying weight. "You think the police walk in here, take a few files, and everything goes back to normal? You’ve just painted a target on this entire family. The people I work with... they don't operate within the bounds of the law. And they protect their interests by any means necessary."
Maya swallowed hard, a cold knot forming in her stomach. The reality of what she had unleashed began to dawn on her. The police were at the gate, but they were only the beginning. The powerful men her father answered to would not take kindly to a security breach, and now, she and her mother were trapped right in the crossfire.
