Chapter 6 - The Reflection That Remained

Elena’s breath caught in her throat, the air turning to ice in her lungs as the figure in the cracked mirror mirrored every desperate contour of her own terror. The reflection’s skin was gray and sunken, the jaw unhinged at an impossible, grotesque angle, yet its hand—slender, pale, and adorned with a heavy silver ring—rose slowly to rest directly against the small of Elena’s back.

A searing, phantom heat burned through the fabric of Elena’s blouse where the ghostly hand made contact. She spun around violently, swinging the tactical flashlight in a wild arc, but the corner behind her was empty. Nothing stood there except the peeling floral wallpaper and a small pile of crumbling drywall dust.

"Elena!" Clara screamed from the hallway, her legs finally giving out as she slid down the doorframe, clutching Lily tightly to her chest to shield the child’s eyes. "We have to leave. Now. This house isn't abandoned; it’s a tomb, and we’re locked inside it with whatever died here!"

Elena didn't answer. Her eyes were locked on the floor where she had just spun. Amidst the drywall dust lay the silver ring she had just seen in the mirror—heavy, tarnished, and unmistakably engraved with her mother’s initials: M.V.

From the floor outside, Evelyn pushed herself up, her dark blue dress stained with dust from the hallway runner. Her eyes were wide, burning with a frantic, desperate clarity as she limped toward the threshold. She didn't look at Elena; she looked past her, straight at the open iron safe, her gaze locking onto the blood-smeared word LIAR.

"You think Miriam killed herself," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a harsh, rattling whisper that commanded the room. "You grew up believing my son drove her to the edge with his cruelty. You built your entire career on avenging a ghost you invented in your head." Evelyn stepped across the threshold, ignoring the freezing air, and pointed a trembling, pearl-ringed finger at the safe. "She didn't jump, Elena. She was standing right where you are standing when the floor gave out under her weight. And my son didn't lock this door to hide a secret. He locked it to keep her from getting back out."

Elena’s knees went weak. The flashlight flickered once, twice, and died, plunging the room into total, suffocating darkness save for a thin sliver of amber light cutting through the open doorway from the hall. In the pitch black, the temperature plummeted further, and the sound of wet, heavy breathing echoed from the empty space directly between Elena and Evelyn.

"Then who," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she stared blindly into the dark, "was holding my hand in the mirror?"

Before Evelyn could answer, the heavy mahogany door behind them slammed shut with the force of a hydraulic press, the iron latch dropping into place with a deafening clack that locked them all inside in the dark.
