Chapter 3 - The Weight of Inheritance

The heavy thud reverberated through the floorboards, sending a sympathetic vibration straight up through Clara’s spine. She instinctively pressed both hands against her swelling abdomen, feeling the sharp, defensive kick of the child inside as if the baby, too, recognized the malice leaking from the threshold. Lily let out another piercing wail, her tiny fingers tangling desperately in Clara’s hair, refusing to look toward the dark corridor where the battle of wills raged on.
Evelyn laughed, a dry, rattling sound devoid of any humor. She straightened her dark blue dress, smoothing the fabric over her hips with hands that barely trembled now. "You think you’re a pioneer, Elena? You think pulling back a bolt makes you some kind of savior?" Evelyn stepped closer, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "That room doesn't hold answers. It holds a ledger. And every single person standing in this hallway is marked in red ink on its pages."
Elena’s grip on the brass handle didn't loosen, though her breathing hitched. "My mother signed her name in that ledger with her blood, Evelyn. You made sure of that when you pushed her out of this family fifty years ago. I’ve spent my entire life cleaning up the mess your pristine blue dresses tried to sweep under the rug. This isn't curiosity. This is an eviction."
"You arrogant little fool," Evelyn spat, her hand darting out to grab Elena’s shoulder, attempting to physically yank her away from the portal.
Elena reacted with instantaneous violence, spinning on her heel and knocking Evelyn’s arm aside with a brutal chop of her forearm. The older woman stumbled back against the floral wallpaper, gasping for air, her pearl earrings swinging wildly.
"Don't touch me," Elena warned again, her voice a low, vibrating threat. She turned back to the door, her thumb finding the rusted iron keyhole just beneath the handle. Without hesitation, she reached into her pocket, withdrew a heavy, iron key tarnished black with age, and slid it into the mechanism. It fit with a sluggish, reluctant click that sounded like bone snapping.
"No!" Evelyn shrieked, making a desperate final dive forward.

Clara watched in slow motion as Evelyn’s fingers grazed the hem of Elena’s trousers just as the iron key completed its full rotation, and a wave of freezing, subterranean air rushed out from the dark room, carrying with it the unmistakable, metallic scent of copper and old dust.
