Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Ruin

The heavy mahogany door trembled under the kinetic assault, its brass handle vibrating with a low, metallic hum that rattled through the floorboards of the dim hallway. Elena, her dark hair pulled back into a severe knot that exposed the tense, sweat-slicked muscles of her neck, planted her sensible black shoes firmly against the worn oriental runner. Her beige blouse strained across her shoulders as she braced for impact, her face contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated territorial fury.
"Get out of my way!" Elena snarled, her voice dropping into a harsh, guttural register that echoed off the floral wallpaper.
Across from her stood Evelyn, sixty years old, draped in an uncompromising dark blue dress that swallowed the dim corridor light. Her pearl earrings caught the single flickering sconce, gleaming like cold eyes in a predator. Evelyn didn't flinch; she pushed past Elena with the unstoppable momentum of a freight train, her eyes locked entirely on the barrier ahead.
Down the hall, five-year-old Lily stood paralyzed in her sunflower-yellow dress, her face red and blotchy as she hugged a ragged white stuffed rabbit to her chest. Tears streamed down the child's cheeks in heavy, silent tracks before breaking into a ragged sob.
"Mommy!" Lily wailed, her voice cracking with a terrifying purity that pierced the thick air.
Clara, thirty weeks pregnant in a loose-fitting beige dress that couldn't completely hide the violent trembling of her limbs, lunged forward to scoop the little girl into her arms. Clara’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps as she dragged Lily backward, away from the impending chaos, her protective instincts warring with her sheer terror.
Elena, momentarily thrown off balance, stumbled backward against the wainscoting. She grabbed her own forearm, her fingers digging deep into her flesh through the silk of her blouse. She stared wide-eyed at Evelyn’s retreating back, her chest heaving as oxygen burned in her lungs. The sheer audacity of the older woman’s intrusion sent a fresh wave of adrenaline crashing through her veins.
With a low growl, Elena lunged forward, her hand shooting out to clamp around Evelyn’s wrist with bone-crushing force. She spun the older woman around, stopping her dead in her tracks inches from the carved wood.
"Never touch me again!" Elena hissed, her face inches from Evelyn’s, spittle flying as her rage peaked.
Evelyn whipped her head back, her expression twisting into a mask of pure murder. She lunged forward with open hands, shoving Elena violently toward the boundary.
"Don't open that door!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with a desperation that froze Elena’s blood.

Elena’s fingers brushed the cold brass handle, and as her palm curled around it, a distinct, rhythmic scratching sound began to echo from the pitch-black void on the other side.
