Chapter 8: The Flash Drive of Truth

The silence in the penthouse foyer was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the climate control system. Elena stared at Lucas as if she were looking at a ghost returned from the grave. Her hands were clenched tightly into fists within the folds of her silk robe, her knuckles turning stark white.
“How did you get past building security?” Arthur demanded, stepping up beside her and placing a protective hand near her shoulder, a silent reminder of their alliance.
Lucas offered a cold, knowing smirk. “Security is just an illusion bought by people who think money can purchase safety. Your father-in-law’s security chief and I go way back, Arthur. Let’s just say he prefers the winning side of a changing corporate landscape.”
Lucas held up the small black flash drive between his thumb and index finger, letting it catch the overhead light. “This little piece of plastic contains every digitized paper trail, every forged signature, and every extortion memo your esteemed father used to ruin my company and force Elena into this sham of a wedding.”
Elena took a slow step forward, her voice shaking slightly. “Is it real? Everything?”
“Every single file,” Lucas said, his tone softening just a fraction as he looked at her. “It’s the ammunition we need to tear down the foundation he built upon our backs. But we have to move quickly. Your father’s legal team realizes I’ve gone off-grid. By morning, they’ll have freezing orders on every asset tied to this apartment.”
Arthur’s mind raced. He looked at Elena, then at Lucas. The enemy of his enemy had just walked through his front door bearing the exact weapon they needed. Yet, trusting a man who had every reason to want revenge against both of them felt like walking blindfolded through a minefield.
“Why bring it to us?” Arthur asked skeptically. “Why not just take it straight to the federal prosecutors or leak it to the press?”
Lucas turned his gaze back to Arthur, his gray eyes narrowing. “Because the federal prosecutors are on your father-in-law’s payroll, and a public leak would trigger a panic that destroys the very corporate assets that fund your company and Elena’s brother's medical care. If we go public recklessly, everyone loses. We need a controlled demolition.”
Elena walked over to the mahogany console table and picked up her laptop, flipping open the screen. The pale blue light illuminated her face, casting sharp shadows under her cheekbones. “Plug it in,” she instructed quietly.
Lucas walked across the room, inserting the flash drive into the side USB port. A string of encrypted folders instantly populated the screen, labeled with confidential corporate classifications and date-stamped internal memos.

Arthur leaned over her shoulder, scanning the scrolling file names. The sheer scale of the corruption was staggering. Embezzlement, bribery, coercion—it was all documented with ruthless administrative precision.
“He didn’t just ruin your company, Lucas,” Arthur muttered, a cold realization dawning on him. “He’s been systematically looting the entire holding trust for a decade.”
