Chapter 3: Fractured Foundations

Elena stared at Arthur, her dark eyes searching his face for any sign of bluffing. Finding none, a slow, bitter smile touched the corners of her mouth. She walked over to the mahogany desk, picking up a silver letter opener and tracing its dull edge with her thumb.

“You think you can just walk away?” Elena asked quietly. “Arthur, you don’t understand the machinery we’re dealing with. The wedding was never just about us. It was a merger of survival. Lucas isn’t a ghost; he’s the architect of the debt that your company accrued before the buyout. If you walk out on me tonight, the board initiates immediate foreclosure on your assets. Lily loses her home, her school, everything.”

Arthur’s stomach dropped. The room seemed to tilt slightly as the pieces of the puzzle violently snapped into place. He had thought his corporate marriage was a clever chessboard maneuver to protect his family’s future after his wife passed away, but he realized he had willingly walked into a trap. Elena wasn't just a wealthy bride; she was the warden.

“You set this up,” Arthur said, the realization tasting like ash in his mouth. “The debt, the buyout, the sudden romance—it was all engineered to trap me here.”

“I engineered a safety net,” Elena corrected sharply, turning to face him. “Your business was failing, Arthur. You were drowning in liabilities, and your grief over your first wife was making you reckless. I offered you a lifeline. All I asked for in return was a husband who could present a united front to the high-society board of directors. But then you brought Lily into this, and things got complicated.”

Arthur took a step forward, towering over her. “Don't you dare act like Lily is the complication here. She is an innocent child who thinks her father is abandoning her to a stranger. You saw her crying in the aisle, and you didn't even care.”

“I cared enough to keep her safe,” Elena snapped back, her composure finally cracking. A single tear escaped her eye, ruining the pristine makeup on her cheek. “You think I wanted this cold, miserable life? You think I enjoy playing the dutiful wife to a man who still loves a ghost? Lucas is coming back, Arthur. And when he does, the white envelope you’re holding will be the least of our worries.”

Before Arthur could demand an explanation, a sharp knock echoed on the heavy oak door.

“Mr. Sterling?” a voice called out from the hallway. “The press is asking for the first dance. The cameras are waiting.”
