Chapter 8

"FBI! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"
The shouted commands echoed off the luxury apartment's high ceilings like thunder. Red and blue tactical laser sights cut through the warm ambient lighting, dancing across the white marble dining table, the half-eaten dinner plates, and the spilled wine.
Elena threw her hands up instinctively, stumbling back against the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city skyline outside was suddenly illuminated by the flashing strobes of unmarked federal vehicles parked fifty floors below.
Marcus dropped the Department of Justice files onto the rug, his hands raised high in the air as three agents in tactical gear swarmed him, slamming him against the concrete wall where the safe remained open. The dark green polo shirt tore at the shoulder as they forced him to his knees, zip-tying his wrists behind his back with brutal efficiency.
"Sarah Vance, drop the portfolio!" another agent yelled, pivoting toward Sarah with a drawn service weapon.
Sarah didn't flinch. With absolute, chilling composure, she let the leather portfolio slide from her fingers onto the floor. She slowly raised her hands, her dark hair falling slightly across her face as she offered a grim, knowing smile to the lead agent. "You're a bit late, Agent Miller. The primary server wipe was completed twenty minutes ago."
Agent Miller, a weathered man in his late forties with sharp gray eyes, ignored Sarah and stepped past her toward the living room. He looked down at the open safe, then at the federal files scattered on the rug, before finally turning his gaze to Elena, who stood frozen by the window in her brown blazer.
"Mrs. Reynolds," Agent Miller said, his tone professional yet carrying an undeniable weight of sympathy. "I'm Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Unit. I'm sorry it had to come to this."
Elena swallowed hard, her voice barely a breath against the glass of the window. "You knew. The entire time we were married, the government knew who he was."
"Marcus Reynolds, or whatever name he was using before he cut his deal, has been on our radar for six years," Miller said, nodding toward Marcus, who was being hauled to his feet by two agents. "When he agreed to wear a wire against Sarah Vance and the rest of the Apex syndicate, his asset agreement included a relocated identity and a protected lifestyle. We monitored his movements, Mrs. Reynolds. We knew about the apartment, the cars, and... unfortunately, we knew about you."
Elena felt the floor drop away beneath her feet. "You used me as collateral? You let a federal informant marry an innocent woman just to maintain his cover in New York?"
"We didn't order the marriage, ma'am. That was Marcus's choice," Miller replied evenly. "Though it seems your husband couldn't resist dipping back into illegal offshore accounts to fund this luxury lifestyle behind our backs."
Marcus spat onto the hardwood floor, his eyes blazing with fury as federal agents dragged him toward the private elevator. "You set me up, Miller! You promised complete immunity if I delivered Sarah!"
"Immunity doesn't cover embezzlement from your own handlers, Marcus," Miller shot back coldly.

As the elevator doors opened to swallow Marcus and Sarah into federal custody, Agent Miller turned back to Elena, pulling a small, secure flash drive from his tactical vest and holding it out toward her.
"Before you decide what to do next, Mrs. Reynolds," Miller said quietly, "you should plug this drive into your husband's laptop. It contains every recorded conversation Marcus had in this apartment over the last five years. Including the one he had with your father the night before he died."
