Chapter 6

The paper rattled in Elena's trembling hand as she read the coroner's preliminary notes. A woman wearing a charcoal suit identical to the one Sarah was currently wearing had been struck by a black SUV while stepping out of a cab near Central Park. The victim had been carrying a briefcase containing forged passports, offshore bank codes, and a framed photograph of Marcus and Sarah from their corporate days at Apex Architecture.

"That's..." Elena swallowed hard, looking up from the report to stare at Sarah. "That's impossible. You're standing right here."

"I am," Sarah said, her voice tight, the veneer of absolute control finally cracking at the edges. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths. "Which means the person who died tonight in that alleyway wasn't me. It was my decoy. The double I hired in Geneva to handle my public movements while I slipped back into the country."

Marcus slammed his fist down onto the marble dining table, rattling the wine glasses and making Elena flinch. "You brought a decoy to New York? Are you insane, Sarah? You brought a target to my front door?"

"I didn't bring her here, Marcus! She was followed!" Sarah shouted, abandoning her calm facade as she stepped around the table, pointing an accusing finger at him. "Someone in our old syndicate found out I was returning to collect the remaining capital. They didn't care about the money anymore; they wanted the loose ends tied up permanently. And since my decoy is currently lying on a stainless-steel table at the city morgue wearing my clothes..." She stopped, her eyes widening in sudden horror. "...they're going to realize the body is wrong within the hour."

Elena stared at the two of them, a sickening clarity washing over the wreckage of her evening. For five years, she had lived in a gilded cage built on stolen cash, lies, and corporate espionage. Now, the cage was unlocking, not to set her free, but to drop her straight into the middle of a ruthless criminal crossfire.

"You're both criminals," Elena said, her voice steady, cold, and utterly lethal. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the glowing city skyline that now felt less like a romantic backdrop and more like a glowing prison wall. "You thought you could use my life as a safehouse for your dirty secrets."

"Elena, listen to me," Marcus pleaded, taking a cautious step toward her, his dark green polo shirt damp with sweat under the warm ambient lighting. "We can fix this. We pack our bags tonight. We take whatever cash is left in the wall safe and we disappear. We can start over."

"Start over?" Elena turned around, her eyes flashing with a fury that made even Sarah take an involuntary step back. "With stolen money? With a dead body in a morgue wearing your ex-partner's clothes? There is no starting over, Marcus. You ruined that the moment you walked into my life under a false name."

Before Marcus could reply, the harsh, piercing sound of an emergency broadcast tone echoed through the apartment. Both Marcus and Sarah froze. Elena reached down to pick up Marcus's ruined smartphone from the table, where a local news push notification had just flashed across the screen.

Elena looked up slowly, her phone screen illuminating her pale face in the dim room. "Federal warrants," she whispered. "They already know you're alive, Sarah. And they know Marcus helped you build the vault."
