Chapter 1

The marble dining table felt colder than it had a moment ago, mirroring the sudden drop in temperature between Marcus and Elena. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline at dusk shimmered with millions of indifferent lights, a sprawling grid of human lives completely unaware of the domestic earthquake happening on the fiftieth floor. Marcus stared intently at his smartphone screen, his thumb hovering frozen above the glass. The notification he had just received was not a routine stock alert or an email from his architectural firm. It was a digital ghost from a life he had carefully buried three years ago.

Elena lowered her fork onto her porcelain plate with a soft, deliberate clatter that cut through the ambient jazz playing from the speakers. She had been watching him for the last ten minutes, cataloging every micro-expression, every shift of his posture, every calculated breath he took to maintain his facade of calm.

"You haven't touched your steak in five minutes, Marcus," Elena said, her voice entirely even, devoid of the warmth she had projected while taking her first bite. "Is the glowing screen more appetizing than the dinner I spent two hours preparing for our anniversary?"

Marcus did not look up immediately. He swallowed hard, his trimmed beard shifting as his jaw tightened.

"It's just a work emergency, Elena. A structural issue at the downtown site. You know how contractors are."

"Don't lie to me," she snapped, leaning forward, the brown blazer pulling slightly across her shoulders. "Contractors don't make you turn pale and stop breathing. Who is messaging you at eight o'clock on a Saturday night?"

"Drop it, Elena," Marcus muttered, finally locking his phone screen and placing it face down on the marble surface.

"I won't drop it!" Her voice rose, laced with a bitter, exhausted edge. "For five years, I've played the supportive wife while you built this empire. But your phone hasn't stopped buzzing with unknown numbers for a month. Are you hiding money, or are you hiding someone?"

"You're being paranoid," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register as he stood up abruptly, knocking his cloth napkin to the floor. "You always ruin things when they're finally going right."

"Ruin things?" Elena stood up to face him, her eyes flashing with fury. "I gave up my career for your vision! If you have nothing to hide, unlock that phone right now and hand it to me."

Marcus stared at her, his chest rising and falling heavily. Without a word, he picked up the phone, unlocked it with his thumb, and slid it across the table toward her.

Elena picked it up, her breath catching as the screen lit up to reveal a single text message that read: "She knows about the transfer. Run."
