Chapter 8 - The Face in the Rain

The cold rain stung Maya’s face as she stood frozen on the slick metal catwalk, her canvas bag clutched tightly to her chest. Blocking her path to the ground-level stairs was Captain Reynolds himself, the aging commander of the Oak Creek precinct. His tailored gray suit was ruined by the downpour, but his posture remained impeccably arrogant, an umbrella in one hand and a sleek, suppressed pistol in the other.
"Dr. Lin," Reynolds said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the drumming rain. "You really should have stayed home. Gardening is much safer for someone of your... delicate temperament."
"You murdered my son," Maya said, her voice devoid of fear, vibrating with a cold, absolute certainty that made the veteran captain pause for a microsecond.
"An unfortunate industrial accident," Reynolds corrected mildly, taking a slow step forward on the slippery metal grid. "The city needed those water purification contracts approved to secure state funding for the new hospital wing. Sometimes, collateral damage is an unfortunate prerequisite for progress."
"Progress?" Maya’s voice rose, cracking with righteous fury. "You dumped industrial trichloroethylene into a public reservoir where children swim every summer! You killed twenty people over three years, and you covered it up with bribes and badge numbers!"
"And yet," Reynolds smiled coldly, raising the suppressed pistol another inch, "no one would ever believe a grieving, unstable mother over the collective testimony of the entire municipal police force. Except, of course, for a few disgruntled officers who decided to violate their oaths."
A muffled crash echoed from inside the control booth behind her, followed by Brody yelling curses and the sound of breaking glass. Reynolds glanced back toward the doorway for a split second, his attention momentarily divided.
It was all the opening Maya needed. Instead of retreating back toward the booth, she lunged forward, not away from the gun, but directly into Reynolds’s personal space, swinging her heavy canvas bag like a medieval mace. The reinforced bottom of the bag—packed with heavy metal folders and the diagnostic tool—caught Reynolds squarely across the jaw with a sickening crunch.
The captain stumbled backward, his umbrella slipping from his fingers to clatter down the metal stairs, his pistol discharging wildly into the rainy night sky. He grabbed the railing, gasping for air as blood welled from his split lip.
Maya didn't hesitate. She scrambled past him down the exterior staircase, her boots slipping on the wet rungs, the rain soaking her clothes to the skin. Behind her, Reynolds roared in anger, recovering his footing and stumbling after her.
As Maya hit the gravel ground at the base of the tower, the headlights of another vehicle swept across the perimeter fence. A sleek black SUV bearing federal insignia smashed straight through the rusted chain-link gates, its tires throwing up mud as it skidded to a halt directly in front of her.
The passenger door swung open, and an FBI special agent in a dark tactical windbreaker stepped out, leveling a badge and a rifle at Reynolds, who was descending the stairs with his pistol drawn.
"Federal Agent Vance—FBI Internal Affairs," the agent announced, his voice booming over the storm. "Drop your weapon, Captain. You’re under federal arrest."
Reynolds froze, looking from the federal agent to Marcus, who had just stepped out onto the second-story catwalk holding a bruised and battered Brody by the collar.

For a terrifying second, Reynolds’s finger twitched on the trigger of his suppressed pistol, his eyes darting toward Maya as if calculating whether he could take her with him.
