Chapter 10 - The Orchard Shortcuts

The police cruiser surged forward, its tires throwing up great plumes of mud and gravel as Maya slammed her foot down on the accelerator. The engine roared, pushing the vehicle past its standard municipal limits as she wrenched the steering wheel hard to the left, diving off the main highway and onto an unpaved logging road that wound through the dense apple orchards flanking Oak Creek. The branches of ancient, barren apple trees scraped violently against the sides of the cruiser, leaving white scars along the dark blue paint, but Maya didn't ease up. She drove with the terrifying, calculated precision of a woman who had navigated these very lanes a thousand times in a calmer life.
In the passenger seat, Agent Vance braced himself against the dashboard, one hand holding the encrypted satellite radio to his ear as he relayed their coordinates to the federal intercept team.
"We’re cutting through Sector Nine orchard road," Vance shouted over the screaming engine and the battering branches. "ETA to the private airstrip is eight minutes. If Sterling gets his bird off the ground, federal airspace protocols prevent us from forcing him down without prior authorization from Washington."
"He won't get off the ground," Marcus said from the back seat, holding a tactical shotgun across his knees as he scanned the tree line for any signs of counter-surveillance. "The local airfield manager is Mayor Sterling’s brother-in-law. He’ll hold the tower open past curfew if he has to."
Maya's knuckles were white against the steering wheel. Her eyes flicked continuously between the dark, muddy road ahead and the glowing altimeter on the dashboard. She remembered teaching Julian how to ride his first bicycle right down this exact stretch of orchard road, back when the world made sense, back before municipal corruption had turned the local water supply into a biological weapon. Every bump in the road felt like a physical strike against her memory, fueling her foot heavier on the gas pedal.
"Hold on!" Maya warned sharply as the road suddenly narrowed, curving sharply around a deep drainage ditch that fed directly into the municipal reservoir.
The cruiser drifted sideways, its rear tires losing traction in the mud for a heart-stopping second before Maya expertly counter-steered, bringing the heavy vehicle back onto the center of the track with a violent jerk that threw both agents against their seatbelts.
"Good reflexes, Dr. Lin," Vance muttered, catching his breath as he straightened his tactical vest. "You sure you never went to the academy?"
"I had a husband who drove rally cars for a hobby," Maya replied tightly, her eyes locked on the amber glow of the runway lights visible through the distant tree line. "And I had a son who deserved to grow up."
The trees suddenly parted, revealing the chain-link perimeter fence of the Oak Creek Private Airstrip. Across the tarmac, a twin-engine turboprop plane sat with its propellers already spinning at high RPM, a deafening whine cutting through the night air. A black luxury sedan was idling right at the base of the boarding ramp, its passenger door open.
Maya didn't brake. Instead, she angled the cruiser directly toward the perimeter gate, aiming straight for the weak point where the warning sign hung.
"Maya, what are you doing?!" Marcus yelled from the back seat.
"Stopping a flight," Maya said coldly.
She slammed the accelerator to the floor. The cruiser accelerated into a howling charge, hitting the chain-link gate at sixty miles per hour. The metal shrieked and groaned before giving way entirely, sending a cloud of galvanized wire and wooden posts flying into the air as the police car burst triumphantly onto the tarmac, directly toward the waiting turboprop.

Mayor Sterling, who had just stepped out of the luxury sedan with a leather briefcase in hand, froze in absolute horror as the cruiser bore down on him with screaming sirens and blinding headlights.
