Chapter 11 - The Tarmac Standdown

The police cruiser skidded in a wide, smoking arc across the wet asphalt of the private airstrip, coming to a violent halt directly between Mayor Sterling and the boarding ramp of the idling turboprop. The blinding high-beams illuminated the mayor like a deer caught in headlights. He stumbled backward against the fuselage of the plane, dropping his leather briefcase, which popped open to reveal neat stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills spilling out onto the wet tarmac.
The doors flew open. Agent Vance vaulted out first, his rifle raised and locked, while Marcus emerged from the other side, securing the perimeter with practiced tactical efficiency. Maya stepped out slowly from the driver’s seat, the cold night wind whipping her blonde hair across her face, her eyes locked entirely on the terrified politician.
"Mayor Arthur Sterling," Agent Vance announced, his voice ringing crisp and clear over the whine of the aircraft engines. "You are under federal arrest for racketeering, environmental terrorism, and the suppression of municipal safety data resulting in multiple fatalities."
Sterling raised his hands defensively, his face draining of all color, his expensive silk tie fluttering wildly in the propeller wash.
"This is a mistake—a gross overreach!" Sterling stammered, trying to maintain an air of political authority even as his voice cracked with panic. "I am the elected executive of this municipality! I demand to speak to my counsel!"
"Your counsel is currently sitting in a federal holding facility alongside your police captain and your corrupt chief of police," Maya said, stepping forward into the harsh glare of the cruiser’s headlights. Her voice was remarkably steady, carrying a quiet, terrifying authority that made Sterling flinch.
The mayor squinted against the glare, finally recognizing the woman standing before him. A micro-expression of nervous disdain crossed his features.
"Ah. Dr. Lin," Sterling sneered, attempting a pathetic recovery of his composure. "I’m truly sorry about your boy. Truly, I am. But progress demands sacrifice. If we hadn't diverted those industrial runoff streams into the lower basin, the entire municipal bond market would have collapsed, and every family in this county would be bankrupt. You should be thanking me for keeping the economy afloat instead of throwing a tantrum."
Marcus, standing a few paces away, tightened his grip on his shotgun, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He took a threatening step toward the mayor.
"Shut your mouth, Sterling," Marcus growled, the restraint finally snapping in his voice.
"No, let him talk," Maya said, holding up a hand to stop Marcus. She walked closer to the mayor, stopping just inches from the scattered cash on the pavement. "You killed twenty children and poisoned an entire watershed so you could balance a municipal budget and secure your re-election campaign."
"I saved Oak Creek!" Sterling shouted over the roar of the engines, his panic bubbling over into outright fury. "You think anyone cares about a few stagnant gallons of water when property values are climbing ten percent a year? You’re destroying everything I built!"
"You built nothing on a foundation of corpses," Maya whispered.
Suddenly, the cabin door of the turboprop pushed open, and the pilot—realizing the situation was completely lost—slammed the throttle into reverse, cutting the fuel supply and winding down the engines with a long, dying whine.
At the same moment, Agent Vance stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around the mayor’s expensive silk cuffs with a definitive snap.
Sterling was hauled toward the back of the federal SUV without another word, his political career ending in a puddle of aviation fuel and wet hundred-dollar bills.
Maya stood watching as the brake lights of the federal vehicle faded into the distance down the service road. She felt an overwhelming wave of exhaustion wash over her, a sudden, heavy quiet settling into her bones. The fight was over. The truth was out. But as she turned back toward the idling police cruiser, her phone buzzed in her pocket with an unexpected incoming text message from an unknown number.

She pulled the device out and stared at the screen. The message contained a single, chilling audio file labeled simply: Julian’s Last Call.
