Chapter 6: Sirens on the Avenue

The distant wail of sirens grew sharper, cutting through the heavy morning air and rattling the double-paned glass of the bedroom windows. Victoria froze, her head snapping toward the sound as the flashing red and blue lights began to paint jagged patterns across the white plaster ceiling. The illusion of absolute control she had maintained for years was dissolving into the harsh reality of flashing lights and approaching law enforcement. Her chest heaved beneath the crimson silk slip dress, the pearls around her neck trembling with every shallow breath. She looked from Julian’s cold, unyielding face to the two impassive security guards standing guard by the heavy oak doors.

"You called the authorities before you even confronted me," Victoria whispered, the realization dawning with a sickening finality. It wasn't just an impulsive discovery by a curious child; it was a well-laid trap designed to corner her before she could access her secondary accounts or shred the remaining paper trail hidden in the house.

Julian tossed the black leather ledger onto the edge of the mattress. It landed with a heavy thud, the pages flopping open to a page detailing fund transfers made just three days prior. He kept his hands relaxed at his sides, maintaining a posture of calm authority that infuriated her far more than anger ever could. The man she had sought to render entirely helpless was now standing tall, his dark wavy hair framing a face carved from absolute resolve.

"I didn't call the police, Victoria," Julian corrected her quietly. "My legal team filed a precautionary welfare check forty-eight hours ago when my blood work results came back from the independent laboratory. The security detail was instructed to secure the premises the moment I woke up with a clear head. You simply ran out of time."

Heavy footsteps echoed loudly on the grand staircase outside the master suite, followed by firm knocks on the heavy oak double doors and the authoritative voice of a commanding officer announcing the presence of the police department. One of the security guards reached out, turning the deadbolt and pulling the heavy door open to reveal two uniformed officers and a plainclothes detective holding a warrant envelope. The crisp morning light flooded into the room, banishing the shadows that had lingered in the corners of the luxurious estate for far too long.

Victoria backed away until the back of her legs hit the edge of the velvet vanity chair, her hands gripping the wood so tightly her knuckles turned white. She looked like a queen about to be dethroned, her carefully curated world collapsing into ruin in real time.
