Chapter 10: Shadows in the Boardroom

Three weeks had passed since the morning the amber bottles were pulled from beneath the bed. The master suite had been thoroughly scrubbed, redecorated, and stripped of every dark memory, yet Julian still preferred spending his afternoons in the downtown corporate headquarters where he felt the steady pulse of reality. Sitting at the head of the polished walnut conference table, he reviewed the preliminary forensic accounting report prepared by his legal team. The numbers were staggering. Over the past eighteen months, Victoria had systematically diverted millions of dollars from subsidiary accounts into private shell companies under her maiden name, utilizing forged signatures and manipulated medical exemptions to justify his supposed incapacity.

Across the table sat Marcus Vance, Julian’s younger brother and the only surviving relative who had sensed something was terribly wrong during the brief, controlled phone calls Victoria had permitted over the past year. Marcus had flown in from Chicago the moment the police report was filed, stepping into the crisis with steady competence and unwavering family loyalty.

"The auditors found three more offshore accounts this morning," Marcus said quietly, sliding a certified document across the dark wood toward Julian. "She was planning an absolute exit strategy, complete with dual-citizenship papers in a non-extradition country. If Claire hadn't looked under that bed when she did, you probably wouldn't have survived the winter, Julian."

Julian traced the edge of the document with his thumb, his dark wavy hair falling slightly across his forehead. The bandage on his wrist had long since been removed, leaving only a faint silvery line that was fading into his skin. He felt no anger left in his chest, only a cold, clinical determination to dismantle every false structure Victoria had erected around his personal and professional life. The deception had been profound, but the exposure was total.

"Let the legal team proceed with full asset freezing and criminal indictments," Julian instructed firmly, his voice carrying the commanding authority that had made his company an industry leader long before his health was compromised. "I want every single transfer documented, every signature verified, and every penny recovered. But keep it quiet from the media if possible. I want my children shielded from the public circus."

Marcus nodded in agreement, folding his hands on the table. "Already handled. The press release frames it as a private domestic restructuring and health recovery leave. Victoria’s defense attorney has already tried to negotiate a plea for reduced sentencing in exchange for returning the liquid assets, but our legal team rejected it outright. She’s facing serious prison time for premeditated poisoning and grand larceny."
