Chapter 3: The Weight of Silence

Victoria froze mid-stride, her silk hem whispering against the rug as her arms dropped to her sides. The desperation in her dark eyes flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a calculating chill that belonged to a stranger. She realized that crying, pleading, and weaponized affection were no longer working. The illusion had shattered permanently.

"You're being paranoid, Julian," Victoria said, her tone shifting instantly from frantic panic to cold, defensive authority. She lifted her chin, attempting to regain the upper hand through sheer intimidation. "You’ve been unstable since the merger fell through. The doctors gave you those prescriptions to help with your nerves. I was just managing your care because you were too weak to do it yourself."

Julian stared at her, the sheer audacity of her defense stunning him momentarily. He remembered the specific medical diagnoses, the private physicians Victoria had insisted on hiring without consulting his family doctor, and the way his mind had felt like wading through thick mud every single morning. It was not a nervous breakdown; it was slow-acting poisoning designed to fabricate an excuse for his incapacitation.

"Management," Julian repeated the word slowly, tasting the venom in it. He stood up from the bed, his knees trembling slightly before locking into place. The black silk pajamas felt heavy against his skin. "You had me locked in this room while my signature was being transferred on corporate documents, didn't you?"

Before Victoria could answer, heavy footsteps echoed in the private hallway outside the master suite. Two men in sharp black suits, wearing earpieces and professional expressions, stepped past the open double doors without waiting for an invitation. Private security, hired privately by Julian's legal counsel a week ago before the memory fog fully settled back in, had finally arrived to secure the perimeter.

Julian turned his head sharply toward the newcomers, his jaw tight. The emotional betrayal still burned in his chest like acid, but clarity had brought strength back to his limbs. He pointed a steady finger directly at Victoria.

"Lock the doors," Julian commanded firmly, his voice cutting through the heavy air of the bedroom like a blade. "Nobody leaves this house until the authorities arrive."

Victoria let out a sharp, incredulous breath, stepping backward as the two security guards moved methodically to seal the primary exits. The heavy oak doors clicked shut with a definitive, mechanical thud that echoed through the luxurious suite. The golden cage she had built around Julian was now locking her inside with him.
