Chapter 9: The Trial Begins

The county courthouse was cold and intimidating on the morning of the custody hearing. Mark sat at the defense table alongside Clara, wearing his one good suit. Across the aisle sat his mother and sister, surrounded by a team of sharp attorneys in expensive suits, exuding an air of unearned superiority and cold confidence. Mark kept his head high, refusing to look down or show weakness.

The opposition opened their argument by painting Mark as an impulsive, unstable individual who had cut off a loving, prosperous family over a minor domestic dispute. They presented financial statements showing his modest income, attempting to argue that he could not provide Lily with the privileged life she deserved. Their entire case was built on the arrogant assumption that wealth was synonymous with proper care and love.

When Clara took the podium, her cross-examination turned the tide completely. With precision, she submitted into evidence the official medical reports detailing the severe bruises and burn marks on Lily from the night Mark fled. She presented photographs of the living conditions and called Dr. Sarah Lin to testify regarding Lily’s remarkable emotional recovery under Mark’s sole care. The cold atmosphere in the courtroom began to shift dramatically as the truth was laid bare.
