Chapter 13: The Starry Night

On Lily’s fifth birthday, Mark organized a simple, joyous celebration in their backyard. Friends from the neighborhood, including Thomas, Clara, and Lily’s teacher, gathered around the picnic table decorated with colorful balloons and handmade streamers. Lily wore a white summer dress, her hair decorated with a wreath of daisies she had picked herself.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of purple and gold, Mark presented his birthday gift to her. It was a custom-carved wooden memory chest, detailed with delicate star patterns around the edges. Inside lay her old blue-starred hoodie—the one she had worn on the night they fled—now cleaned, restored, and neatly folded.
Lily picked up the hoodie, holding it close for a moment before looking up at Mark with a bright smile. ""I don't need to wear it anymore, Daddy,"" she said softly, placing it gently back into the chest. ""Because I'm not scared anymore."" Her words were the greatest gift Mark could ever receive—a clear confirmation that the shadows of her early childhood had finally been replaced by security and love.
