Chapter 5: A Helping Hand

Recognizing that his family would not concede so easily, Mark sought professional legal counsel to secure sole legal custody of Lily. He was introduced to Clara Vance, a seasoned family law attorney who ran a modest practice in town. Clara was known for her fierce advocacy for children's welfare and her zero-tolerance approach to domestic mistreatment. Sitting in her office, surrounded by stacks of legal briefs, Mark shared every detail of the family's neglect and the night he fled.
Clara listened intently, taking thorough notes as Mark presented documentation of Lily's injuries and photos taken on the night of the incident. ""They have money and influence, Mark,"" Clara cautioned, her gaze direct and serious. ""They will try to frame you as unstable, unfit, and incapable of providing for her. But what they don't have is the truth, nor do they have the child's best interests at heart. We will fight them on every front.""
Clara’s commitment gave Mark a renewed sense of strength. She began preparing an ironclad case for a permanent protective order and full legal guardianship. For the first time since leaving his home, Mark felt he was no longer fighting this massive uphill battle alone. The small-town community was wrapping its protective arms around them, offering a stark contrast to the hollow, conditional support of his biological family.
