Chapter 8

The heavy iron security gate at the main entrance of the estate loomed dark and imposing against the starless night sky. Usually programmed to swing open automatically for authorized family vehicles, it now stood locked in place, held shut by heavy magnetic locks tied directly to Evelyn’s private terminal in the library. Two state police cruisers sat idling just outside the perimeter, their blue and red emergency strobes flashing silently against the ancient stone pillars, casting eerie geometric patterns across the asphalt.

Inside the leading cruiser, Detective Sergeant Miller sat reviewing the encrypted digital dossier that had been transmitted directly from the estate's master server twenty minutes earlier. The files were astonishingly thorough—complete bank records, forged digital signatures, unauthorized property transfers, and meticulous audit trails detailing months of systematic embezzlement orchestrated by Julian Vance and his associates. It was one of the cleanest white-collar crime packages the financial crimes unit had received all year, compiled not by federal investigators, but by an eighty-year-old matriarch who refused to let her legacy be stolen by ungrateful heirs.

A sharp rap on the cruiser window made Miller look up. Standing outside in the cool night air was Evelyn, draped in a heavy cashmere shawl over her white boatneck dress. Her silver hair caught the flashing blue light as she stood with absolute composure, looking down at the officer with a steady, commanding presence. Miller immediately pushed the button to lower the window, leaning his arm against the frame with a respectful nod.

"Mrs. Vance," Miller said, his tone deferential. "We received your transmission. The forensic files are... remarkable. Every transaction is documented down to the exact timestamp."

"There is no room for ambiguity when dealing with theft disguised as family business, Sergeant," Evelyn replied, her voice calm and measured. "My grandson and his associates are currently inside the perimeter. Vance’s men are parked near the lower service drive, attempting to collect on debts Julian accumulated through illegal real estate speculations using trust property as collateral."

Miller nodded, signaling the second cruiser to pull forward toward the side gate. "We’ve already secured the perimeter, ma'am. Nobody is leaving these grounds until every individual involved in this operation is identified and questioned. Are you certain you wish to press full charges against your own family members?"

Evelyn looked past the flashing lights toward the dark silhouette of the manor house in the distance. A faint amber glow still emanated from the library windows, marking the sanctuary where she had spent a lifetime building an empire of discipline and honor.

"Family is built on loyalty, mutual respect, and sacrifice," Evelyn said softly, her eyes hardening with quiet resolve. "What Julian and Margaret practiced was parasitism. A healthy tree cannot survive if it allows the rot to consume its core. Cut out the diseased branches, Sergeant. Let the law take its course."
