Chapter 10

Back inside the quiet sanctuary of the library, the amber glow of the desk lamp cast long shadows across the towering bookshelves. Evelyn sat in her high-backed leather chair, her fingers resting lightly on the polished wooden armrest as she watched the final telemetry data stream across her smartphone screen. The remote connection to the estate’s master server confirmed that all secondary access points had been successfully purged, encrypting every corporate asset, philanthropic trust, and real estate title behind a triple-layered quantum firewall that no outside hacker could ever breach.
The heavy mahogany door opened softly, and Chief Security Officer Henderson stepped into the room, holding a secure encrypted tablet. His dark suit was immaculate, his posture rigidly professional as he approached the edge of the mahogany desk and placed the tablet down beside Evelyn’s phone.
"The perimeter is fully secured, Mrs. Vance," Henderson reported in a low, steady voice. "State troopers have taken custody of Victor Vance and his associates down at the service drive. Julian and Margaret were detained for questioning regarding the unauthorized transfer of philanthropic funds and the falsification of corporate deeds. The local district attorney’s office has already confirmed they will proceed with formal arraignments in the morning."
Evelyn nodded slowly, her expression remaining entirely neutral, save for a faint, tired line around her eyes. "And the physical premises?"
"Completely swept," Henderson replied. "All unauthorized personal belongings belonging to Julian and Margaret have been packed and placed in temporary storage off-site, exactly as you instructed. The guest suites have been locked and tagged for maintenance."
"Good," Evelyn murmured, leaning back slightly against the leather cushioning. "Ensure that the philanthropic board is notified before dawn. I want a complete restructuring proposal ready for our morning meeting. The funds that were siphoned off must be fully recovered through asset forfeiture proceedings against Julian’s remaining personal holdings."
Henderson hesitated for a fraction of a second, a rare flicker of personal sentiment crossing his hardened features. "If I may speak freely, ma'am... that was a difficult decision to make regarding your own family."
Evelyn raised her eyes, meeting the security chief’s gaze with absolute clarity. "Sentimentality is a luxury for those who do not carry the weight of a legacy, Henderson. My husband and I spent fifty years building this institution to serve a purpose far greater than our own bloodline. When individuals choose greed and deceit over honor, they remove themselves from the family equation. There is no room for sentiment in the preservation of truth."

Henderson bowed his head respectfully. "Understood, Mrs. Vance. I’ll see that the restructuring directives are prepared immediately."
