Chapter 5

Through the floor-to-ceiling arched windows of the library, the sprawling back lawns of the estate stretched out into the moonlit darkness, bordered by ancient weeping willows and manicured boxwood hedges. Evelyn stood watching the silver-tipped grass sway gently in the midnight breeze. Down below, near the gravel service drive, a sleek black sedan idled with its headlights turned off, casting a faint silhouette against the dark shrubbery. She recognized the vehicle instantly. It belonged to Victor Vance, a notorious private financier known for operating in the gray areas of the law—the very man Julian had foolishly entangled with to fund his disastrous real estate speculations.
The sudden vibration of her smartphone broke the quiet stillness of the room. Glancing down at the screen, Evelyn saw an encrypted message from her chief of security stationed at the security gatehouse: “Unauthorized vehicle lingering near service entrance. Two unknown males attempting to access pedestrian trail.” Evelyn pressed her thumb against the biometric scanner, authorizing the automated perimeter lockdown. Heavy steel security bollards rose silently out of the asphalt at the gatehouse, trapping the idling sedan between the perimeter wall and the private drive.
She felt no fear, only a cold, clinical satisfaction. For decades, men like Victor Vance had operated under the assumption that wealth inherited or leveraged through intimidation could bend any rule, break any contract, and bully any opponent into submission. They had completely miscalculated her. Evelyn had survived the brutal corporate battles of the nineteen-eighties, weathering hostile takeovers and vicious smear campaigns orchestrated by ruthless executives who were far more terrifying than a second-rate loan shark in an expensive suit. Julian’s weakness had invited these predators into the family estate, but Evelyn’s iron discipline was locking the cage door before they could devour everything she had built.
The library door creaked open again, wider this time. Julian stood in the threshold, disheveled, his silk tie ripped away and his dark suit jacket wrinkled from nervous pacing. The arrogant facade had completely crumbled, leaving behind the hollow, panicked expression of a spoiled child who had finally broken his favorite toy beyond repair.
"They're outside, aren't they?" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly as he pointed a trembling finger toward the dark windows overlooking the lawn. "Vance’s men. They’re here because the digital asset keys didn't transfer. They think I lied to them, Evelyn. They’re going to ruin me."
Evelyn turned slowly from the window, her silver hair catching the amber light of the desk lamp. She looked at her grandson with an expression of profound, unyielding disappointment.
"They are here because you invited them, Julian," Evelyn said evenly. "You signed away assets that never belonged to you, believing your last name would shield you from the consequences of your own stupidity. You traded my legacy for a temporary high at the gambling tables and speculative real estate schemes. Look out that window. That is the reality you built."
Julian rushed forward, slamming his palms down on the mahogany desk. "You have the power to stop this! Just unlock the accounts for one hour! Transfer the condo deed over, and they'll walk away!"
May you like
"The condo was sold to the philanthropic trust this morning," Evelyn replied without raising her voice. "And the accounts are permanently frozen. You are entirely on your own, Julian."
