Chapter 8

The porch light cast a warm, amber glow over the figure standing on the welcome mat. It wasn’t Richard. It was Sarah, the blonde woman from the kitchen video, though the glossy confidence captured on the screen had completely evaporated. Sarah stood clutching a beige trench coat tightly around herself, her hair unstyled and her eyes red-rimmed, bearing the unmistakable marks of a woman whose world had just shattered along with Richard’s.
"Elena," Sarah said, her voice cracking slightly as she averted her gaze, unable to meet the steady, piercing look in Elena’s eyes. "I know I have no right to be here. I know you probably want to slam this door in my face."
Elena didn't move. Her hand remained resting on the edge of the open door, her body language a wall of defensive architecture. "You were in the kitchen, Sarah. You were laughing while he mapped out how to institutionalize me and take my daughter."
"I know," Sarah whispered, a tear spilling over her lower lash line and cutting a track down her cheek. "And I am so, so sorry. Not just because he got caught—though God knows I’m paying for that now too—but because I believed his lies. He told me you were already gone, that the marriage was just a legal fiction, that you were a fragile ghost who didn't even know what day it was."
"And you believed him because it was convenient," Elena replied, her voice dangerously quiet, carrying a cold edge that cut through Sarah’s excuses. "You wanted the prestige, the lifestyle, the proximity to a man you thought was untouchable."
"Yes," Sarah admitted, her shoulders slumping in total defeat. She didn't argue or try to deflect the blame. She reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a heavy manila envelope, extending it across the threshold with trembling fingers. "When the federal marshals raided his office this morning, I realized how deep his web went. Richard didn't just target you for custody, Elena. He spent the last two years systematically looting your late husband’s corporate accounts, funneling the estate funds into offshore accounts under my name without my full knowledge—or at least, that’s what he’ll claim to protect himself."
Elena looked down at the envelope, then back up at Sarah’s face. The raw terror in the other woman’s eyes was unmistakable. Richard wasn't just a sociopathic manipulator of family law; he was a white-collar criminal who had left a trail of financial wreckage that would take months to untangle.
"Why bring this to me?" Elena asked, suspicion tightening her jaw. "Why not take it to the authorities?"

"I already gave a copy to the federal prosecutor," Sarah said bitterly. "This copy is for you. It contains the ledger keys to the hidden trusts. Richard thinks he’s clever, but he kept meticulous records of every cent he stole from your husband's legacy. If you want to strip him of everything—not just his freedom, but his power—this is the map."
