Chapter 2

Maya’s small leather shoes clicked against the marble floor, echoing through the cavernous room with the sharp clarity of a metronome. The bailiff stepped forward, his hand hovering near his belt, ready to intercept a procedural breach. But Maya did not cower. She stood her ground in the center aisle, her pigtails swinging slightly as she lifted her chin. Her knuckles were dug deep into the protective rubber casing of the purple tablet, her thumb resting anxiously over the glowing screen.
"Please watch what daddy said!" Maya’s voice cut through the heavy courtroom atmosphere. It wasn't a shout, but a clear, piercing plea that demanded the attention of every soul present.
Richard’s calm smile flickered, replaced for a fraction of a second by a microscopic twitch in his left eye. He turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing as he locked onto the eight-year-old girl. The ease vanished from his posture; his spine stiffened against the leather back of his chair. He knew the device in her hands. He knew every byte of data stored within its silicon memory.
"Your Honor, I must object," Richard said, his tone sharpening, losing its oily polish. "This is entirely improper. A minor child is being coached and manipulated by the defense to disrupt these proceedings with unauthenticated hearsay."
"I'm not coached!" Maya retorted, her voice trembling slightly with the weight of her courage, though she refused to back down. "It's right here. He told her. I recorded it."
The judge raised a silencing hand, his gaze shifting from the agitated attorney to the steadfast child. Judicial protocol dictated caution when involving minors in civil disputes, but the raw authenticity in Maya’s voice bypassed the legal armor of the court. "Step forward, young lady," the judge instructed gently, gesturing toward the bench. "What is it you have there?"
Elena finally lifted her head, her breath catching in her throat. She hadn't known about the tablet. Maya had been quiet lately, retreating into her bedroom with headphones and hushed whispers, but Elena had attributed it to the trauma of their shared loss. A surge of protective terror washed over her. If Richard had planted that device or if this was some cruel trap, Maya would be caught in the crossfire.
Before the bailiff could take the tablet, Richard slammed his hand down on the mahogany table with a resounding crack. The stack of legal folders jumped, scattering a few loose papers onto the floor.

"Lookly, put that down right now!" Richard roared, his voice stripped of all professional detachment, revealing a raw, desperate panic that echoed off the high ceiling.
