Chapter 4

The wall-mounted television screen flickered to life, casting a cold blue light over the solemn faces in the courtroom. A clear, high-definition video filled the display, showing a sunlit, modern kitchen that reeked of expensive taste and sterile architecture. In the center of the frame stood Richard, laughing casually, a heavy crystal glass of red wine cradled in his hand. Beside him stood a striking blonde woman in a silk blouse, leaning against the marble island, swirling her own vintage.

In the bottom corner of the frame, a stark text overlay read: 4 WEEKS AGO.

The ambient audio of the courtroom faded, replaced by the crisp, recorded sound of the kitchen. Richard’s voice echoed from the speakers, smooth, confident, and utterly devoid of the grief he had feigned in public.

"She’s still weeping over the old man's desk," recorded-Richard said on the screen, taking a slow sip of wine. "It’s pathetic, really. But it works in our favor."

The blonde woman laughed, a tinkling, cynical sound. "And the custody filing? Are you sure the judge will buy the instability angle?"

"Completely," recorded-Richard replied with a cruel smirk. "We will turn her grief into mental illness. It’s clean, it’s legal, and by the time she realizes what hit her, the asset freeze will leave her penniless. She won't have the resources to fight us."

In the live courtroom, the physical Richard sat frozen in his chair. The sweat was now pouring freely down his temples, matting his dark hair and soaking into the collar of his crisp shirt. He looked like a man watching his own execution in slow motion. The gallery broke into a low murmur of shock and disgust, several spectators shaking their heads in sheer disbelief at the calculated malice of the man who had sat so righteously moments before.

Elena closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling the immense physical weight of validation wash over her. For months, she had doubted her own mind, wondering if the isolation and the exhaustion were signs of a failing mind, as Richard had so often whispered during their brief encounters. Now, the gaslighting was laid bare for the entire world to witness.

On the screen, the video continued to roll, exposing not just a plot against a grieving widow, but the cold blueprint of a predatory mind that had underestimated a little girl sitting quietly in the corner with a purple tablet.
