Chapter 6: The Corporate Web Unravels

Arthur Pendelton stumbled into the open atrium, his expensive designer suit awkwardly twisted from Mark’s firm grip. Officer Miller quickly stepped in, relieving Mark of the suspect and guiding Arthur against a concrete pillar with practiced efficiency. Arthur’s face was slick with sweat, his eyes darting frantically between Clara in handcuffs and the stony expressions of the surrounding community members.
"This is a complete overreach!" Arthur stammered, his voice cracking with defensive panic as Officer Torres secured a second set of handcuffs around his wrists. "I am a senior director! You have no jurisdiction to detain me based on some elderly woman's gadget recordings! This is corporate harassment!"
Evelyn calmly crossed her arms, looking at Arthur with undisguised contempt. "Corporate harassment? Arthur, your voice was loud enough to bleed through the air vents into the garden where I was sitting. My smart watch didn't just pick up Clara; it picked up your direct instructions telling her to retrieve the 'package' from a five-year-old child if necessary. You were willing to sacrifice an innocent little girl to cover up your embezzlement scheme."
Arthur paled visibly, his arrogant facade crumbling instantly. He looked at Clara, hoping for solidarity, but Clara merely glared back at him with pure hatred, realizing he had used her as the frontline scapegoat while he safely hid behind his executive title. The betrayal within the criminal partnership was absolute and instantaneous.
Mark stepped back beside Sarah and Lily, his breathing slightly elevated from the physical exertion of detaining Arthur. He looked down at Lily, who was finally quiet, clutching her pink smart watch with a slightly calmer demeanor. "You okay there, kiddo?" Mark asked gently, offering a reassuring smile. Lily nodded shyly against Sarah’s cream cardigan, her tears finally drying up.
Officer Miller looked between the two handcuffed suspects and Evelyn’s digital evidence. "Alright, both of you are coming down to the precinct. We’ll impound the smart watches as chain-of-custody evidence for the federal district attorney." Miller spoke clearly into his shoulder mic, requesting a second transport unit to handle the dual arrests. The quiet Saturday afternoon at the community center had transformed into a major law enforcement operation.

As the officers escorted Clara and Arthur toward the glass exit doors, the onlookers in the atrium erupted into a low murmur of shock and relief. The realization that such a high-level corporate conspiracy had nearly victimized an innocent child right in their own neighborhood left everyone deeply unsettled. Yet, thanks to Evelyn’s quick thinking and modern technology, the plot had been thwarted in its infancy.
Sarah let out a long, audible breath, her shoulders finally dropping from their tense, defensive hunch. "Well," she said softly, looking at Evelyn and Mark. "That is certainly not how I expected the charity bake sale to go today."
