Chapter 3: Unraveling the Panic

The tinny playback from Evelyn’s blue smart watch filled the tense space of the atrium with an unsettling clarity. Clara’s voice echoed from the tiny speaker, discussing encrypted files, missing hardware, and a frantic need to recover a specific tracking device before a 4:00 PM audit deadline. The onlookers exchanged uneasy glances. The pink smart watch Lily clutched against her chest was not merely a child's toy; it was the physical casing for a high-security corporate beacon that Clara had smuggled out of her office under false pretenses.

Clara lunged forward with a desperate, clawing motion, aiming for Evelyn’s wrist to destroy the evidence. "Give me that!" she hissed, her pristine composure completely disintegrating. But Mark was too fast. He intercepted Clara’s wrist mid-air, gripping her arm firmly and forcing her back a step. "Don't you dare touch her," Mark warned, his blue shirt straining against his flexed muscles. "You’ve made enough mistakes today, Clara. Making physical contact with an elderly woman is going to land you in a jail cell before you can even explain your corporate mess."

Evelyn calmly tapped her watch, pausing the audio playback. Her wrinkled face remained remarkably serene despite the chaos surrounding her. She looked directly into Clara’s wide, panicked eyes. "You see, Clara, old age doesn't mean my hearing—or my tech literacy—is failing. When you sat on the bench near the garden twenty minutes ago, cursing under your breath about a 'lost prototype,' I happened to be recording my daily voice memo. Your frantic tirade bled right into my audio file. And then, when you spotted little Lily wearing a pink watch that looked identical to your missing dummy unit, you projected all your criminal negligence onto a child."

Sarah gently lowered Lily to the floor, keeping one hand securely on the little girl's shoulder. Lily wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand, looking up at the adults with wide, incomprehensible eyes. The pink smart watch on her wrist glowed softly, a cheerful unicorn graphic lighting up its tiny screen—a birthday gift delivered just hours earlier by Evelyn herself, who was a close family friend of Lily’s parents. The stark contrast between the innocent child’s birthday present and Clara’s high-stakes corporate espionage conspiracy left the surrounding crowd murmuring in disbelief.

"It was a decoy," Clara muttered, her voice dropping to a defeated whisper as she slumped against a concrete pillar. The fight had completely drained out of her, leaving behind only the cold dread of inevitable consequences. "The real prototype... I hid it inside the casing of the pink watch model because security only scans standard luggage. I swapped the packaging boxes in the supply room this morning. I didn't think anyone would notice until I was safely out of the state."

Mark shook his head in absolute disgust, releasing Clara’s arm but keeping himself positioned to block any sudden movements. "You used a child's birthday gift as a mule for stolen corporate property? Are you completely out of your mind, Clara? That is federal felony territory." The gravity of Mark’s words settled over the atrium like a physical weight, turning the neighborhood charity event into a literal crime scene holding area.
