Chapter 5: Unmasking the Accomplice

Officer Torres stepped up to Clara Vance, his movements deliberate and professional as he took her arm. "Clara Vance, you are being detained on suspicion of corporate theft, harassment, and reckless endangerment of a minor. Turn around and place your hands behind your back." The click of the steel handcuffs echoing off the terrazzo floor sounded like a gavel falling in a courtroom. Clara offered no physical resistance, her body limp with shock, but her eyes darted frantically toward the side exit doors, as if waiting for someone who was supposed to be there.

"Wait," Evelyn said sharply, stepping closer to the officers before they could lead Clara away. She tapped her blue smart watch again, bringing up a secondary data log. "Before you take her out, check her phone logs. She wasn't acting alone. The audio file captured a second voice on the receiver end—someone inside the building guiding her movements, telling her exactly where to intercept the package exchange."

Officer Miller paused, his hand resting on his holster. He looked at Clara, whose face drained of what little color remained. "Who is your accomplice?" Miller demanded, his voice dropping into a stern interrogation tone.

Clara bit her lower lip so hard it threatened to bleed, refusing to answer. But her nervous glance toward the hallway leading to the administrative offices gave her away instantly. Mark caught the direction of her gaze and narrowed his eyes. "The administrative wing," Mark said aloud. "The charity bake sale committee room is down that hall. Only board members have keycard access today."

Without waiting for permission, Mark strode purposefully down the short corridor toward the administrative offices, his blue shirt vanishing around the corner. Officer Torres kept a firm grip on Clara while Officer Miller radioed for backup to secure the perimeter exits. Sarah remained with Lily, gently rocking the child and speaking soft words of comfort to help her process the overwhelming morning. Evelyn stood quietly near the doorway, her smart watch still blinking with digital vigilance, ensuring nothing was missed.

Moments later, the sound of a scuffle echoed from the hallway, followed by Mark’s commanding voice shouting, "Hold it right there! Don't move!" Officer Miller immediately rushed down the corridor, leaving Officer Torres to watch over Clara. Within a minute, Mark reappeared, dragging a struggling, well-dressed man in his early forties by the collar of his designer suit jacket. The man’s face was beet red, sweating profusely under the harsh fluorescent lights of the hallway.

"Arthur Pendelton," Evelyn murmured, her tone laced with cold recognition as she identified the director of regional compliance for Clara’s firm. "The very man who signed off on the internal security audit. How poetic that he was orchestrating the leak from the inside all along." The web of corruption was unraveling entirely, exposing a deep corporate conspiracy right in the middle of a quiet neighborhood charity event.
